Last night I watched a re-run of the 2010 Scottsdale auction. Up for bid was a beautiful 1957 Desoto, steel grey metallic over orange, an absolutely stunning car! It sold for $57K. As I watched, drooling over this offering (which was a nice break over the endless supply of Shelby's and Corvettes), the onstage announcer spoke of the DeSoto's "tastefully outlandish" fins, or something to that effect. The other announcer then made some cutting remark about the Exner cars. Their attitude seemed to me as though these cars were a joke.

I don't get it. These FWL cars are sought after by many collectors, have steadily increased in value, and are reflective of their era and of the tastes and styles of that time. Many of us still think they are some of the most beautiful cars ever created by Detroit. They may not be to everyone's taste, but they are historical milestone cars and deserve respect. There are many cars that cross these auctions that don't appeal to me, but as a car guy, I still respect the engineering and design that went in to those cars.

Well that's the end of my rant. To all my fellow forward lookers, here's looking forward to a happy and healthy NEW YEAR and continued happy motoring!

I see a benefit to the perceived lack of respect for FL cars, it makes the price more attractive to those of us who really love them.

The announcers are idiots. The only difference between us and them is that they are holding a microphone and get paid for babbling about cars that they know little about.

The forward look cars ARE the most beautiful cars ever created by Detroit, but you have to realize that the majority of people have boring taste in cars (and pretty much everything else for that matter). Here are two cases in point: The K-car, one of the plainest dullest looking boxes ever created would have been an absolute embarrassment in a world of good taste, yet that was the car that was so popular it pulled Chrysler out of its slump in the early 80's. The boxy 79-92 Ford Mustang was the boxiest, plainest looking Mustang of all time, and that body style endured for 15 years!

Hell, if Chrysler had stuck to their early post-war approach of making stodgy cars, they might have overtaken GM as the number one auto maker at some point. Luckily for us, they hired Exner instead.

Had I not bought my DeSoto back when no one cared, that attention and respect FL'ers want everyone to
have for our cars, I could not afford to buy it.

I enjoyed these cars a lot more when they were MY spectacle and could just be enjoyed by me while the
rest of the world scoffed or ignored them. You saw them on the road all the time. It was great.

Now that they have all this "respect", you never seen them on the road except in the hands of diehard
enthusiasts, and the prices for "more respected" models is simply out of sight for the average car guy.

To me, this is not a good thing.

Well said, Ron. Because these babbling idiots are on the allmighty television, they are influencing millions. As I'll bet many of you have noticed, it trickles down to Average Joe on the street, telling you after seeing your old car that his brother's wife's boss has a Mustang that's worth $150,000! Because Barrett-Jackson said so! (as if we Forward Lookers and other 'minority' groups care) LOL. It simply amazes me how many I run into seem to think overexposed cars like Corvettes, etc are the Gods of the old car hobby, and everything else pales in comparison, or is not even worth mentioning. I blame that on the hype caused by these shows...they are so biased. Muscle, though popular, was merely a small sample... time, production, and innovation-wise, of a much larger group of never again to be produced historical machines.

There needs to be more on TV and film like Christine (except without wrecking cars) to give people a fresh influence.

How about a show that enthusiastically points out that ownership and maintenance of a pre-1970
car is not only cheaper, but far "cooler" than buying and owning anything made since. Put Detroit
out of the new car business and into the reproduction parts business and put the foreign stuff simply
out of the American market.

Maybe those who do appreciate the F/L vehicles, might want to applaude those who know not squat about the F/L and babble about their lack of worth, their lack of value, and that should be beneficial in help keeping the acquisition cost down?

Drive a well restored car like my 55 New Yorker, then drive a 60's Mustang or Chevy, Ford, ridiculous.

I have to agree that the announcers on these auction shows are pretty much boneheads. Lots of misinformation gets spread around the hobby by these folks.

I just took a look at the history of this car on the B-J web site. The same car sold there three years in a row, 2008 it sold for $104,500.00, with fees, in 2009 $63,800.00 with fees, and this year with fees 64,900.00

Whoa! That is very telling of the car hobby and the Great Recession.

Timing seems to be the thing when it comes to buying an old car. Same holds true of the semi-exotics, like Jags for instance. One of those big-money auctions sold an XK-E roadster that had to cost over a hundred thousand to restore a good car to start with, for $60,000. Money, and people who have it come and go, and the hobby always benefits in the long run. The fools who look at cars as an 'investment' will always be with us, thank goodness. It gives the rest of us a chance at what we really love, and just for it's beauty, not it's long-range value. A great hobby, don't you think?

Not that I follow 'the market', but I was under the impression that classic cars were doing well righ now as 'an investment' because people are looking for items of inherent value to invest their money into (like gold) rather than losing everything to hyper-inflation. I know the ubiquitous Chevelles and the like are way down, but then they were always a fad, anyway. But 'high value', 'investment grade' cars...I thought...were doing better. I would think the Adventurers would fit into that category.

I guess if it's not a 60s Vette it's simply a placeholder at B-J. At least they dumped that obnoxiously condescending British guy-he used to act like a school girl at a Justin Bieber concert everytime anything that wasn't built in the colonies came across the block.
