The Plainsman was on display at the WPC National Meet at our Friday Evening Tour of the John White Collection in Sacramento. John doesn't own this car but it was brought specifically to his facility for the WPC Club to see it that evening.

I took the photos below. It's very rough. The styling is not my cup of tea, at all. It looks very suspciously like a Ford Concept car that was build around the same time as this, was discussed on another thread here several weeks ago.

At least three of the pictures in the eBay ad were taken at the RM auction garage structure at the AZ Biltmore hotel awaiting the appearance on stage last week in Phoenix.   Here are a couple more.

Hmmm, looks like virg got into the "future Generous Motors stuff" to build that.
Note the Ponttyack front end, and the Crasholac details at the end of the bumper.
It also has "Hints" of Packard when viewed from the side.
And that top "It's outta sight" well mine anyway!!!!!!!

Gary, agreed that the split grille is reminiscent of a Pontyack, but actually it's more like a Mercury concept, as discussed a few weeks ago http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=28758&...

I think we have a clue in this page.   This isn't Exner's work on this car;  it was "Created by stylists of the Engineering Division".   Now what that means is a question for an engineer from that era and I have sent off an email to one of them in hopes of finding out.

Yep, alto the "Merc" to me anyway, has a lotta Lincoln in it , not nearly as much Generous Motors stuff as Virgil's, alto the end treatment of the rear bumper on the Merc, has hints of "CaddyLack"

Here are two more photos that tie this car to Ford styling.  The black car exists at the Ford Museum in Greenfield Village and is called the '53 Ford X-100.  The styling studio photo pre-dates 1952 and probably shows the X-100 in clay as a red car lower center of the photo.  Impossible to question, IMHO, that the front fender peaks and front bumper corner protrusions and basket handle roof on the Plainsman didn't all come out of this same styling studio on these cars and the Mercury concept also in this thread.

There is always room for a "HOWEVER" in researching history I think.   Ran across this Virgil Exner sketch for Studebaker (you will recall he worked for Stude before he came to Chrysler).  Look at the shape of the headlight overhangs and the front bumper area and of course that Stude bullet nose is out there but it is really similar to the inserts in the Plainsman bumper ends!

This sketch is known as the "Mystery sketch" and for decades has made people wonder if the impetus for the renowned '53 Studebaker coupe and hardtop styling credited to Raymond Loewy and Bob Bourke was not inspired by this very Exner sketch pre-dating those cars by some five years.   Virgil Exner Jr. has no info on this sketch; thus the "mystery".

"Wish they had put that bullet nose on them ." They should have put two on them, then the car really would have been "Dolly (ed) Up"

Some of you know Burt Bouwkamp was a long time Chrysler engineer (Motor Engineer and then Resident Engineering Manager) at the Chrysler Division Jefferson Plant from 1954 until 1960 and was involved in the Chrysler 300 program in some way from the 300B on.  He worked directly for Bob Rodger.  Later he was deeply involved in the Charger program and went on to Chrysler Europe and Chrysler Mitsubishi.
My comment to relate Burt's below to our discussion here is that:  With Chrysler's reputation as an engineering company, it would follow to promote their concept cars to the public as being styled by engineers .....  until Exner altered the paradigm!

Wayne,
The picture caption is technically accurate. When I started at Chrysler in 1949, Styling was part of Engineering; i.e. the head of Styling reported to Jim Zeder, VP of Engineering - and subsequently to Paul Ackerman when Jim Zeder retired.
I am not sure exactly when it happened - but it probably was when when Virgil Exner was made a VP in 1957 - Styling began reporting to the President.  Until then they were part of Engineering so I guess you could call them "styling engineers".

I think we define the Forward Look cars as the PRODUCTION cars from 1955 through 1961. Concept cars carry design and engineering elements that may or may not appear in the same era as the year the car is actually displayed on the show circuit, if ever. The Plainsman and several other concepts were built and displayed in the Forward Look era but I personally find no justification to call them Forward Look cars per se.

cant have that many miles.... theyre not driven that much - the interior is rough along with the vinyl roof... that material is one off and will have to be

custom made. does everything work? i know hes around - hed better want it - nobody else will - joe bortz COLLECTS prototypes. has money to throw

away.. if he dosent want it - no one will!

there was a early 50's lincoln prototype - i think the futura.... after a year or 2 nobody wanted it it sat around and ford wound up giving it away...

Joe Bortz alread owned the Plainsman for several years. If I remember correctly it is one of several cars his ex-wife got as part of the divorce settlement. She divested herself of the cars fairly quickly and the car is being sold but yet another owner. I don't think Joe wants to restore any more concept cars - he has moved on and is no longer the king of that genre. The new king was probably John O'Quinn in Houston who had a number of concepts and was big on Chrysler stuff but he died in a car accident in 2009.

And Burt Bouwkamp made further inquiry for us of Al Bosley who wrote to Burt and I'll summarize - According to the book "Chrysler Concept Cars 1940 -1970" by David Fetherston and Tony Thacker the PLAINSMAN was designed by Dave Scott (Plymouth Studio) and it was finished by Maury Baldwin (Styling Research). So it is a Dave Scott design fleshed out by Maury Baldwin. And I'm going to guess the next bit of research finds that Dave Scott was formerly employed at Ford Styling; I betcha.

This is quoted from Allpar:

"Designed by Dave Scott, the "Plainsman" started life as a "coupe de ville"-type town car. At Exner's suggestion, Scott modified the design to create a station wagon (wagons were becoming big business at Chrysler). First sketched in February 1954, the order to begin construction was given to Ghia in October 1954.

When the car was unloaded from its shipping crate in Detroit on December 5, 1955, and placed on wheels for the first time, the lead-laden body sank under its own weight. A heavier Chrysler New Yorker suspension was called upon to cure the problem. Powered by a 260ci V-8 the 4,900lb car was thoroughly underpowered. "

1956 Chrysler Ghia Plainsman Station Wagon Concept Car – Low Reserve

This is a Chrysler Auto Show Car developed through out the United States in 1956 at all of the auto shows.

This car was recently on the cover of Old Cars Weekly, January 21, 2010. This rare, original, as found 1956 Chrysler Ghia Plainsman Station Wagon concept car has been on display at all the important museums in the United States including the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum, the Petersen Auto Museum, the Gilmore Museum and others. This is the only known 50’s concept car/dream car station wagon that exists today.

At the RM Auction at Meadow Brook a 1953 Chrysler Ghia, 2-door hardtop, fully restored car sold for $850,000.00. You could restore this car and sell it and maybe profit up to half a million dollars.

This car featured such advanced styling cues and mechanical functions as including the first station wagon to have a rear facing third seat. Also the rear window lowers by power into the tailgate and then the tailgate opens as power operated. The rear tailgate opens to step plates that were designed to come out of the rear bumper. The third seat is also power operated so that it will either setup into a seat or flatten into the floor all by power. The interior was finished with unborn baby calfskin. The spare tire is stored in the rear fender. The gas cap is under the left rear taillight, which sucks in under vacuum to expose the filler cap for filling the car with gasoline.

Virgil Exner designed 95% of Chrysler concepts and then the Chrysler chassis’ were shipped to Ghia. The completed concept cars were then returned to the United States for show purposes but had to be exported out of the United States within eighteen months in order for Chrysler not to have to pay duty. This particular car was shipped to Cuba after its show purposes and was given to the president of all of the Cuban banks. After his death the car was returned to the main Chrysler dealership in Cuba. The export manager for Chrysler Corp. lived on a large estate in Cuba and was given the car by the Chrysler Corporation and shortly thereafter Castro took over Cuba and chased out all of the Americans.

The Export manager for Chrysler escaped from Cuba with all of his worldly belongings including this Chrysler concept car and returned to the United States.

The Export Manager had the car refitted by Chrysler with a Chrysler 440 engine, which currently powers it. This car was produced as a 2-door station wagon because Chrysler anticipated the success of the Chevy Nomad and wanted to have a competitive vehicle. However, this is the one and only ‘show” 2-door prototype station wagon that exists today.

He was later promoted to the Export Manager of Australia where he lived for many years and then retired to California. Again taking this concept car with him. The car was given to his son and the son later gave it to his son. In the late 80’s the car was sold to a famous auto collection where it remained for a number of years before it was sold to the present owner. It was the intent of the present owner to restore the car to its original pristine condition but the financial climate in the United States has forced him to put the car up for a reluctant sale.

This car is highly documented and similar restored concept cars to this have sold previously within the last six years for $1 to $3 Million Dollars. Again the financial climate in the United States forces the current owner to sell this car for a more then attractive price. This is one of the rarest Chrysler concept cars and the only concept station wagon known to exist from the 50’s and the 60’s from American Manufacturers.

This car runs down the road just fine. The power tailgate and power rear seat are fully functioning.

The Italian custom body manufacturer Ghia also manufactured bodies for other foreign automotive manufacturers. Ghia is considered such an important company that this year the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance featured Ghia cars.

Yes, the car needs all cosmetics.

A ONCE in a lifetime opportunity to have one of the finest American concept cars in your collection! This car is listed at a very low reserve.

The owner and car are both located in San Mateo, CA.

Factory photos are in Black & White.

Mileage as stated on odometer 50354

I've read in most accounts of this car that it is upholstered in the skins of unborn calves - - Isn't that kind of creepy?

I think we define the Forward Look cars as the PRODUCTION cars from 1955 through 1961. Concept cars carry design and engineering elements that may or may not appear in the same era as the year the car is actually displayed on the show circuit, if ever. The Plainsman and several other concepts were built and displayed in the Forward Look era but I personally find no justification to call them Forward Look cars per se.

I agree with you that this and some of the other concept cars made during the forward look era aren't "Forward Look" cars as we define them, but the Dart Concept sure was!

This car seems to borrow heavily from Ford, the slide lever control panel dash even made it into the '57 Lincoln premiere.
I don't think it's ugly, but Exners production models blow this away.

If there was one concept car that I wish would have survived intact it would be the 1956 Dart....that car embodied the very spirit of the "Forward Look"

Can this car be described as being a FORD-looking design?

Un-born calves?

How do you feel about eating veal? Or a pate' ?

I think that still-born calves were liberated of their skins, as opposed to the critters that some of us really enjoy eating, who
also lose their skins, in the process of serving our needs.

d500neil - 2010-11-12 5:47 PM Can this car be described as being a FORD-looking design?

YES, absolutely.  The assorted elements of the concepts, models, sketches the FORD design staff is shown working on in numerous photos taken around 1952-53 look like twin brothers and sisters to the Plainsman.
