Hi I am looking for a bit of info and advice. I am totally new to chrysler V8s, so its a bit of a learning curve. I have a 383 engine from 1960 so far as I can work out.
Casting number is 2120420 and the number stamped on the (passenger) side of the block is P 38 1125 and the head has the number TY7-1125-16

This engine was from a Facel Vega, a French grand tourer of the 50s/60s and all I know is that chrysler batch built the engines for Facel and they were called 'Typhoon' engines (hence the TY7 designation). The engine is painted black, has a single 4 barrel carb with a 300 type oval air cleaner and was rated as 330hp, they also did a 2x 4barrel carb version which is quite common but usually with a manual box. Mine has the 488 cast iron torqueflite.

I think the engine is a low block with a 4 1/4 inch bore and I need to re-build it. I just drained 2 gallons of water out of it but apart some bores showing rust pitting looks like it might be OK... I hope!

I was told that this version had a slightly different camshaft. Looking at the parts available for these engines is there anything that wouldn't fit from a later engine (are all the pistons the same?). I am missing starter, distributor, water pump, fuel pump as well. I would be grateful for any help!

Simon.

If your talking as a later engine like the RB verus the B engine, they are not interchangable, the B engine are from the 35, 361, 383 and 400, the RB 383, 413, 426 and 440.... raised block, evrything is different as in pistons, crankshaft and so on....
if you looking to rebuild the 1960 383 make sure the parts are for a "B" block.... you can get just about anything you need from summit racig

This is a 383 from a FacelVega, mated to a "Pont-A-Mousson" manual gearbox (which was used on the exclusive 300F "special".). I don't remenber if it's a B or RB 383 block but i can ask to the owner.

Thanks for the replies. Is that a standard water pump and housing in the pic? I have seen them new on ebay etc in aluminium to fit the 383 but not having one to compare it to I don't know if it is the same.

Easiest way to tell a RB block from a low block is the RB blocks have the raised pad next to the distributor with stamped engine number. Most parts except pistons will interchange from later engines in the same respective B or RB family. I rebuilt a RB 413 using all RB 440 parts (except pistons of course).

Distributors are different between B and RB engines. Water pumps and fuel pumps should interchange. Water pump housings are different. I do not know which starters will work for your combination.

There isn't a raised pad by the distributor but the number is stamped on the front of the cylinder head (drivers side one) near the valley. Here is a pic of how I found it!

How do I remove the distributor/ oil pump drive shaft? I need to get the cam out but cant see how the drive gear for the dist comes out. Otherwise shes all apart and ready to go to the shop to see what can be done with the bores.

To get the Distributor drive shaft out you can use a slotted screwdriver in the slot the distributor sits in and turn the gear out the opposite direction unscrewing it from the camshaft gear. That should raise it up far enough to pull the rest of the way out by hand.

Here's a pic from the web of a RB block with the raised pad for comparison.
