Member Posts: 48 Location: Banks, Oregon | I'm not sure what I'm going to do with this one! I picked it up in Vancouver, Washington last night. 1961 Chrysler Newport Four Door Hardtop. She is VERY complete, but rusty...right rear quarter panel in gone, pretty sure the trunk floor is swiss cheese and the floors are soft. Probably too far gone huh?

Member Posts: 48 Location: Banks, Oregon | I will try to get some more pics of the interior floor rust out. I can't get the trunk open right now (no key) to see just how bad the trunk floor is...but from what I can see from underneath I think it would have to be replaced. I stuck my foot through the rear foot pan area...so that worries me a bit also!

Veteran Posts: 264 Location: Pieksamaki, Finland, Europe | Looks like a fairly good project to me. It's kind of funny to compare project cars in the US and over here in Scandinavia. A rusty car which is "too far gone" by public opionion there is "a great start for a renovation" over here. You would be amazed to see some starting points of Scandinavian showstoppers =)

Expert Posts: 4533 Location: Ripon, WI | I wish mine was a 4 door hard top. What would it take to make a sedan into a hardtop?

Expert Posts: 1918 Location: Hell's Outhouse - a.k.a. Buckeye, Arizona | Well Mike, depending on your gumption, the same thing Peter Issacksen took to make his '72 Buick Electra 225 4 door hardtop into a convertible back in 1993. Speaking of which, why has your Newport accumilated a thick layer of dust? Something wrong or has it yet to unhibernate from winter? Edited by 1955Coronado 2009-05-12 9:14 AM

Veteran Posts: 125 Location: Melbourne, Australia | Hey Mike, I know 4 dr H/Tops are more desirable but for a sedan the roof lines are quite low and sleek all the same. The interior on the 4dr h/top is identical to mine....cheers..Anth. Edited by anth61 2009-05-12 10:02 AM (IMGP3384-1.JPG) Attachments ---------------- IMGP3384-1.JPG (85KB - 199 downloads)

Board Moderator & Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 13055 Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | The roof line is the same for 4-Sedan and 4-HT, at least '60-62 for sure. The only "difference" is really the B-pillar and the low or high rear window. That in my opinion is what makes the '60-'62 so much wanted and loved.

Member Posts: 48 Location: Banks, Oregon | Thanks for the encouraging words everyone! Here are a few more pics..... Passenger side rear foot pan. Drivers side rear foot pan. Right side rear quarter panel area...or lack there of! Transmission tunnel. (I don't know if you can tell but it has a few holes through it) Drivers side front foot pan. It's soft but not completely wasted. Another of the dash. How can a tell what engine this is??? Edited by bigfinmopar00 2009-05-12 10:56 PM

Expert Posts: 1918 Location: Hell's Outhouse - a.k.a. Buckeye, Arizona | How's the rest of the frame, Mike00? From what you've shown of it (passenger rear), it's still solid. Mike77, are you exercising your Newport now & breezing the dust off of her? Sometimes it's a bit hard for me to understand the need to keep cars in for the winter, as we can drive them without fear year 'round down here.

Board Moderator & Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 13055 Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | Well, if the floorpans and trunkpan is to be changed, it doesn't really matter how ruff they are.

Well, they collect dust in the winter, so they don't look like this one by summer. They salt the roads here like my old man used to salt tomatoes.

Expert Posts: 1918 Location: Hell's Outhouse - a.k.a. Buckeye, Arizona | I hear ya, Mike - maybe "comprehend" might be a better word. I haven't been in a snowy/icy climate since I was 9 years old (nearly 29 years ago) - my blood's like water with food coloring & the roads here cook tires in the summer as opposed to bodies in the winter. Member Posts: 48 Location: Banks, Oregon | Luckily the frame is not rusted at all. That's a good thing about Oregon, even though the moisture from the rain might cause the sheetmetal to rust, they don't use salt on the roads, so the 'heavier' metal is usually ok. The floor pans don't worry me near as much as the quarter panel does. I really have no idea how I'm going to fix that! Do they make repop metal for these? Since I got it home on Sunday I've looked around a bit online and there really doesn't seem to be much for the 60 and 61 cars avialable.

Member Posts: 48 Location: Banks, Oregon | Thanks guys. I would like to see those pics Kenny. I also found a guy on Ebay that has some repro metal too. Knowing that the parts to fix the rusted out areas are avialable makes me feel much better about being able to bring the old girl back to life eventually.
