Expert Posts: 2338 Location: central oklahoma! | i know it's not a forward look issue, but i thought you guys might be able to help. i have a 1969 115hp evinrude, electric shift (ouch). it runs like a scalded dog, but unfortunately it is an extinct animal. i'm finally starting to have shifting issues, which was the downfall of this design of outboard. parts seem to be as plentiful as forward look torsion bars..... any clues on sources? forums? resources? etc? thanks, fellas. i already have the SELOC manual, which is excellent, by the way.

Walter passed away on Jul 29, 2014. We will miss you, Walt! Posts: 5358 Location: Heaven Above (Formerly Oklahoma City,OK) | If the oarlocks are present, be sure you have at least two oars in the water............................. When "oaring" your boat, face the stern so you can tell which way the lower unnit on that wonderful outboard motor is pointing in case you need to alter your course. None of these precautions are mandatory, just Helpful Suggestions.....................

Expert Posts: 3155 Location: NY & VT | I restore antique outboards as well as cars, and worked for years at a friend's Marina in VT, in my summers off from teaching... I've worked on many, and owned several, OMC V-4s with pushbutton Selectric Shift (like our FLs, but electric like Packards!) , circa 1962 to early '70s - it is a wonderful mechanism and very reliable IF maintained properly... it eliminates mechanical shifter clutch dogs, the weak link in any l/u, and makes anyone able to dock like a pro - you can shift instantly from F to R using the shift buttons (on Evinrudes, but Johnson used an electric shifter controlled by the throttle lever). I wish Bombardier - who bought OMC when they went bankrupt due to Ficht injection failures - still made it. I'm lookig for a mint 63 -68 Evinrude V-4 for my old aluminum Starcraft Chieftain cabin cruiser. Selectric was expensive, a luxury feature. The magnets do eventually get tired, which may be your problem, if the right l/u lube has always been used - it is 39 years old after all! The key is you MUST use the special lower unit oil recommended by OMC for the electro-magnets to function properly. Most failure is due to using the wrong fluid. All the parts are still available, and it is worth the hassle IF your powerhead has good compression - above 100lbs in all cylinders, and ideally around 115 to 125. Evinrude has a few parts, and Don Gano in Iowa has all Selectric parts I think, you can Google him, or look at the Links at www.aomci.org - my other web "home". Veteran Posts: 195 Location: New Philadelphia, Ohio | He's right! They made a special lube just for the Selectric lower gearcases. As far as getting parts for those? There used to be a guy that had a website known as "The Outboard Doctor." Do a search and see if you can't find it. He used to sell anything from decal kits to obsolete parts. Came in quite handy when I restored a customers 1957 35hp OMC a few years back. Plus, he had all the parts I needed for my old 77 85hp V-4 Johnson that had trim and tilt issues. You might also check any local marinas that are in your area. (Don't know how many there are in Oklahoma) But sometimes you just might luck into one that still keeps everything. I worked at Atwood Lake Boats 10 years ago here in Ohio, and they used to have a pile of NOS parts for OMC. Plus, there's an old timer I know who has a pile of NOS OMC parts, including powerheads. Send me an e-mail, and I can get his number for you. Last I knew, he had one building with nothing but stuff for older OMCs and Mercs. Ripper
