I was extremly lucky to be able to drive my fathers 59 New yorker when I was in high school. It had a heater that ran off the fuel tank. Instant heat in sub zero Minnesota was great, untill it started to malfunction. The police and fire people told me to let it burn after the 3rd incident.

Does anyone know when these heaters started showing up in the Chrysler line and how many years they were offered?

thanks,

Ray

Sounds like a gasolene heater. I've never seen one on a MoPar but I know they were offered during the FL era as an option. Southwind (Stewart-Warner?) made some models, but I've only encountered them in connection with air-cooled VWs which benefited from the gas heat. When I worked for the VW garage a buddy of mine bought a brand new in the box heater for a Type 181 (Thing) (at an employee discount) that he adapted to his Type 3. He was very toasty all winter after that.

If no one in this group of FL fanatics has run across this gas heater option, it must have been rare. The vehicle also had the automatic dimmer, mirrormatic, electric windows, and power seat.

It was the exact match to the black 4 door hardtop that was featured in the 2 page fold-out in the 59 Chrysler brochure. All I knew was that the girls liked it and it beat everthing on the street untill the muscle cars arrived on the scene.

Next time I am in southern MN, I may start a search for it.

They offered insta heat heaters in 1956-1959 at least.
I will have to pull my 60-62 Accessory manuals to see if they were offered in those years

Hi Ray,

as usual the always excellent Imperialclub pages has some answers....also in the shopmanuals, but in the little technical service bulletins is also enough information:
http://www.imperialclub.com/Repair/Lit/Master/132/Page17.htm
A couple of months ago I saw the system in a 56 Imperial. Too rotten to use and missing many pieces. Most striking detail was the extra exhaust system that had the size of a Toyota's.....

Thanks to everyone for the info. I wish I had the service document way back then. I would have to guess that the dealer in my small town didn't have the manual or didn't understand it at the time.

1956 - 59 is probably right for the Instant Heater option. I doubt it carried over to the unit body cars for 1960 and beyond.

The instant heater option went for $136.30 in 1959. You could not order air conditioning and an instant heater in the same car.
