So, the opening bid (which was shown as being a "Reserve Not met" amount) was exactly $50,000.00 (a safe bid)
and the second bid, by some "rich guy", was only $100.00 higher(????) than the opening bid-----even though the
second bidder should have had NO clue how much HIGHER than $50,000.00 the first-bidder's maximum-bid-amount
was (like, maybe: 55K, or 60K, etc).....unless the second bidder somehow suspected that the opening bid would have
been precisely 50K.....and hoped that his $50,100.00 bid would have been 'safe', too; an "ego" bid, or, a shill-bid, to
try to attract attention to this deal, to make it appear like there are bidders interested in this car.

And, now there's a third early-bidder on this car.

first person bid exactly 50,000
second person bid exactly 50,100 (required minimum increase of 100)
third person bid at least 50,200 but less than the reserve.

I know people that bid the low opening price knowing they will either be outbid or not meet reserve. The do this as a way of bookmarking the auction and to get the email notices from eBay when bids are increased. It does not necessarily have to be related to shill bidding or anything illegitimate. Retracted bids, multiple new users or zero feedback users is when I might give it a second thought.

"CORONET SUPER D-500 CONVERTIBLE FINISHED IN EGGSHELL WHITE AND CRIMSON READ A GROUND UP RESTORATION IN 2007, AND ONE OF ONLY 11 KNOWN TO EXIST"

I wonder where they get those numbers?  I would be surprised if there were actually 11 factory coded 1958 Super D-500 Coronet convertibles around now.

VERY strange bidding.

"Everybody" had $50K to bid on the car, but NO-body had enough-more to get the high bid over $50,350 ?????????

Sure.

The Reserve must have been $50,500.00.

oh, how the mighty have fallen! I think this car sold at auction in 2007 for $220,000 - five short years later, they have to shill bid the thing to get it above $50,000.

Maybe it's not getting action because some know the reserve is high. The highest I remember it getting bid up to on eBay was $100,100. It did sell for $220k 5 years ago. The only 58 Coronet convt with a Super D known?

Does anyone know this car? Any history on it? I know it was at IAG in Florida, then ended up in St Louis at Schmitt: http://www.schmitt.com/viewimage.asp?ID=5045

I'd really appreciate any history on this car or condition information on this car?

Hi, Mike:

There are a bunch of threads on this particular car. In one of the threads, there is a site member who used to own the car. He chimed in on the restoration of the car and the value. I did a few quick searches in the eBay threads and came up with several related threads, but not the one I was looking for. Maybe it was in the general forums?

At any rate, there is someone here who knows all about it. It was originally an all-eggshell car.

It has been at back to back brokers. I'm doubting it went into private hands, maybe have just been an exchange between dealers. Something has to be "wrong" with it, I just can't seem to get any clear info on what that is.

The obvious thing wrong, Mike, detail wise, is that it is a Coronet with a Custom Royal interior ( seats). Door panels are Coronet.

Thanks, Matt, for supplying this link. I read some VERY interesting stuff!! Some of it with my name on it!!

Well, I've been searching what is left of my memory, and, I only recall getting involved in any decoding before I joined this forum just twice! Interestingly, both times involved questions about 58 Super Ds. I THINK I remember this one and I THINK I remember who may have suggested that I could decode a 58 body plate for him. The other example turned out to be a D 500 not a super D.

Again, as I recall, I just asked him to send me a "rubbing" of the body plate and I would express an opinion as to whether or not it was a super D. Bottom line, I told him it was. I don't remember "decoding" anything else on the body plate for him.

Thanks Neil and JK for your support in this thread!

I was hoping others could guide me on what else might be non original to the car. They have interest in one of my cars. I'd be doing a trade + cash, which is the only way I'd consider buying the car. Does SMS or anyone else sell the correct materials for the seats?

Mike, what car are you thinking of for this? There are a lot of inconsistencies with this car, but the fact remains - it is a 1958 Coronet convertible originally equipped with the Super D-500 option. Obviously, the market has been tested on this car and the people have spoken - it is no longer worth $130,000 dollars - but it does have value.

I just like being extra nosey haha. The resources on this board are so amazing, I had to at least ask to make sure there were no hidden stories about the car. This happens a lot in the muscle car world. Outside of the D car, this would be the first real investment style car I'd have. Where we wouldn't modernize it and make it like a pro touring cars like our others. It's an area I'm a bit unfamiliar with and I figured it didn't hurt to ask questions. If I make it up Tuesday, I want to be as knowledgeable as I can be. The more things I can point out wrong, the stronger the offer I can make for my side. One thing I can say, if I end up with the car it will be driven. Not 10k miles a year, but it will see road time.

Mike, if the goal is to point out the flaws (probably all mentioned before) -

it is coded 1XXX, and should be a monotone eggshell car
TRM code 123 is a black and white? Coronet interior - the Coronet style door panels don't match the Custom Royal seat covers.
the spinner wheel covers on the car are from 1957
the front fenders under the headlights are painted incorrectly
the front license plate bracket is missing and the plate is screwed into the valence
the hood ornaments are 1957
it is missing the fender mounted rear view mirrors (at least in the pictures I saw)
the belt line molding on the driver's side is askew
a courtesy light lens is missing on the driver's side rear arm rest
no rubber floor mat in the trunk
the top boot should be white
the carpet heel pad looks incorrect
the gold block letters on the hood do not match the chrome script on the trunk
the glove box emblem is 1957, which makes me wonder about the aluminum inserts (which shouldn't be there)
this may not have been a padded dash car originally
it would be nice to have the old style battery cables
sun visors may be missing

In truth, I don't know how much if any of that would really devalue the car! Some of it might be annoying, but very little is worth fixing until the next full restoration - which looks like many moons away. I think it is fantastic the way it is - especially for the intended use.

Mike says:

"In truth, I don't know how much if any of that would really devalue the car!"

Like; almost EVERYTHING about the way that this car has been currently 'presented', would de-value this car, from what it would be worth, as
compared to a similar-condition car, in its (correct) OEM appearance and equipment!

About the only way to evaluate this, or a similar car's 'devaluation' is to compare it to the OEM appearance of a surviving car, or the appearance
of a correctly restored car.

As we all know, a car is 'original' only once...and the BETTER that its OEM appearance is, the MORE that the car is worth.

The fact that this ride hasn't previously sold speaks volumes about Smart -vs- Stupid money.

Stupid money can always buy virtually anything.

the meaning behind the statement is: this car is what it is. Sure, you can bitch about a few things here and there, but the basic fact remains: this really is a 1958 Dodge Super D-500 convertible. You want a better one? go find it. This car is probably the only game in town.
