Yep that is the Vin number

M = 1959
3 = Dodge
1 = Coronet 8 Cylinder
4 = LA assembly Plant
102657 = Sequence number.. which start at 100001.. So yours should be the 2656 car built..

Well thats how i read it anyway,, haha

I can handle part of it:

MODEL - MD2L (Should be "L", not 1)
M - 1959
D - Dodge (122" wheelbase)
2 - 326-cid V8 (A block poly)
L - Coronet Base Model

BT - Body Type : 313
3 - Dodge (122" wheelbase)
1 - Coronet V8
3 - 4-door sedan

PT - XX1 (Paint)
XX - Upper and Lower Color - Pearl White
1 - Paint scheme - One color used on whole car.

SO NO
0127 5003

Shipping Order Number - 0127 5003, where 0127 is the scheduled build date - January 27, 1959. The 5003 means it was the 3rd Dodge scheduled the day. The "5" stood for the body being assembled. Plymouth was usually "1".

42,616,006

This is a numeric serial number where only the first number can be decoded - "4" was for Dodge built at LosAngeles. Detroit production started with "3". This holds for 1955, 1956 and 1957. In 1954 the "4" was for the San Leandro, CA plant. The first serial number for the LA-built D63 (Dodge V8) was 42,608,001. So, your car was the 8,006th D63 built at LA.

M = 1959 model year
3 = Dodge
1 = Coronet V8
4 = Los Angeles assembly plant
102657 = Sequential production number

Your car was the 2,657th "M31" built at "4". Each prefix started at 100001 and 1959 was the last year Chrysler did that. Starting with the 1960 models, the first car off the line was 100001 and the second off the line, regardless of make, model or series, was 100002. And so on until the plant was finished for the model year.

Okay. It is a D63 Custom Royal and yes I figured it was built in LA because of the "4". But it is a D-500 (engine and 12" brakes, not the suspension). I *think* the original full package D-500s were built in Detroit, i.e. "3" so I guess at some point after March 1956 (?) when the D-500 "light" package was available, "D-500"production also was done in LA (???).

Bill: What can you tell me from this (I have figured out production was scheduled for May 15, 1956 but that is it):

Thanx Powerflite and Chrycoman ! ! !

I love to know as much about a car as I can. It's just the way I am. I love history and even knowing the history of the car is very fascinating and fulfilling.

I hope the build sheet is still in the car somewhere and I eventually find it.

I had a highly optioned '59 Custom Royal that I ended up selling that still had the sheet held to the top of the glove box with the original tape! It was built in MI.
