Veteran Posts: 295 Location: Tallapoosa, GA | wizard - 2016-03-04 5:13 PM I might be wrong but to me it looks like the Plym lost? In the world of drag racing, it's not necessarily who gets to the finish line first, but who comes closest to their dial-in time. Nonetheless, it's still way cool to see that old 58 tool down a track against that thunderchicken and do so well compared to a car that is much lighter than it!

Veteran Posts: 295 Location: Tallapoosa, GA | Back at it again today!! First, I finished polishing the control knobs. Using the brass wire wheel on the dremel, slowest speed possible. I noticed that the wore out wheel works perfect for getting into small corners and valleys. So don't throw them away when they get thin! Also, I noticed that very light pressure is essential... one of the tabs on the round back knobs started to discolor from heat, so EASY does it! Veteran Posts: 295 Location: Tallapoosa, GA | And now, for the real reason I started this thread to begin with! It's not for bragging or tooting my own horn, but rather to help those who would rather do all the work themselves. SO, next I tore apart the wiper motor and cleaned it. How? Well, I use full strength liquid laundry detergent and a small wire brush and/or stiff toothbrush...(makes a perfect de-greaser). The rule of thumb here is if the grease smears, add more soap. You need to use it pretty liberally. Once the grease/dirt is dissolved by the soap, simply rinse with hot water. The pics below will tell more, but a couple of tips here: 1) take lotsa pics 2) use a SCREEN drain catcher, and for smaller parts, scrub them over a screen collander (this will catch small unseen parts and washers that are stuck) Also, I use a rinsed out styrofoam meat tray to 'push' the small screws into and also to hold any other hardware for re-assembly. Don't be afraid to get this stuff wet.... the rule here is just to make sure everything is completely dry before putting it back together. And, the gasket is shot, but I tried to work it off as carefully as I could to use as a template to cut a new one. Then I dremel wire brushed the gasket surfaces to get them clean and flat. The pics tell the rest. Next is the wiper control switch. I'm starting the teardown as soon as I finish this post. Stay tuned!

Veteran Posts: 295 Location: Tallapoosa, GA | Got the wiper switch apart, and made sure to mark with a sharpie that fiber disc inside to make sure to get it in the right place again. Also, old dental pliers work well for bending some of the holding tabs that hold it together where a side cutter doesn't fit. The switch is pretty crusty inside, complete with some light corrosion and dry-baked grease. Had to wrap up the screw holding trays with some saran wrap, as the landlord is fixing a busted water pipe in the pumphouse, so I'm temporarily waterless; time to take a break. I did pull the horn ring out, found a wasp nest inside the round cap!.... yikes... and started polishing both of them. Veteran Posts: 295 Location: Tallapoosa, GA | Worked on re-assembly of the wiper motor today. Notice in the pics I use a special blend of grease for motors, controls, etc. Starting with regular red grease you would pump into grease erx, I mix transmission fluid in with it until it is smooth (approx. 50/50 ratio). Grease by itself is too thick, and trans fluid is too thin, so a combination makes a perfect lube to let the motor spin more freely (especially when it's cold), and the trans fluid has a high detergent, which will keep the grease from getting sticky and hard. On re-assembly, it's the reverse of assembly obviously, just make sure to pack lotsa greaseyoil into all the spots where parts move. I forgot to explain the 'scratch' I put into the nylon gear before.... the arrow points in the same direction that the outer arm points. The hardest part is getting the brushes on.... couldn't take pics as I needed all my fingers to put it together. The trick is to invert the motor assembly (brushes UP) with the motor shaft sticking out a bit, and apply pressure on the outer arm so the shaft doesn't drop down, and hold the brushes back by the wires until you can wiggle the assy onto the shaft. Then you just have to make sure before dropping it in the rest of the way that the brush wires won't hit the outer casing. Had to stop there, as the old gasket is too shot to use as a template, and I couldn't find any permatex, so I'll havta buy some tomorrow after work. That'll be good enough, as this thing is just going to be a daily driver/dragger. Veteran Posts: 295 Location: Tallapoosa, GA | wizard - 2016-03-08 1:19 AM Nice step by step pics, thanks' for sharing! You're welcome!! I hope this helps y'all... I also should mention that the same method works well on power window motors. The greazoil concoction makes them run faster and very smooooth! Also works well on fan motors, power antenna motors, and almost anything else that moves where oil is too thin and grease too thick. Since I plan on keeping this car, I want all the gadgets to be trouble-free. Speaking of which, I noticed the brushes on the wiper motor, even though still had some meat on them, were wore down a bit, so I need to get a new set and file them until the old ones are wore out. Also should mention that the laundry detergent cleaning method works on everything from light duty stuff, to degreasing wheel bearings. Full strength, it cuts well.

Veteran Posts: 295 Location: Tallapoosa, GA | Amen, Pete!! And Thank You!! Got the Permatex today, but I need to bench test the wiper motor before closing it up. Plus, I want to cram more greazoil into it leaving as little air in there as possible. Went to test it, and my 12V bench power supply crapped out.. So, I'll havta get a new one.... No regrets though..... it's the same one I've had since I first got into forward look cars back in 1992!! If I could have a dollar for every thing I've bench tested with it, I could gold plate engine. Oh well, I still can finish working on the switch.

Yes, both engines are classified as "B" block engines, cranks, heads, mounts, etc. will interchange. If there are any differences, I don't know of any, as I have not had a 350 BB before. I have to correct myself when I said that I didn't know of any differences... to clarify, I don't know of any in the BLOCK... however, the crankshafts are different at the back end. The 350 crank has a flange with holes in it to receive studs that are welded onto the stock 58 torque converters, and nuts on the block side fasten them together. The 383 (mid-60s and up) crank flange has threaded holes to receive bolts that mount a flexplate, which in turn has four outer bolts that fasten IT to the torque converter. There are threads on this topic, just search "pushbutton 727", or "BB engine swap", etc. All the answers are in the old threads. Have fun reading!!

Veteran Posts: 295 Location: Tallapoosa, GA | Worked on her a bit more today. Got this weekend off, so I'm charging a battery to bench test the wiper motor before closing. Meanwhile, since it's supposed to rain tomorrow, I figured it appropriate to yank out the wiper arms and pivots. They're pretty stiff and rusty, so I hope the shafts will slide out of the housings for cleaning/lubing. Also, took a sharpie and marked "pass" on the pivot as well as the control arms that are on the passenger side.... just in case. (MVC-001S.JPG) (MVC-002S.JPG) (MVC-003S.JPG) (MVC-004S.JPG) Attachments ---------------- MVC-001S.JPG (29KB - 169 downloads) MVC-002S.JPG (21KB - 187 downloads) MVC-003S.JPG (22KB - 178 downloads) MVC-004S.JPG (21KB - 176 downloads)

Veteran Posts: 295 Location: Tallapoosa, GA | Ran into a slight snag on taking the wiper pivots apart. It appears the factory never intended for them to be taken apart, as the shaft is peened onto the control arm. I ground it down to get the control arm off, no problem.... then I discovered that the square end of the shaft is larger than the inner part of the shaft, and the first washer is welded to it... both making it impossible to slide it out. SO, seeing as how I MUST take them apart in order to do this right, I'll have to grind down the square end and washer of the shaft, and weld on a threaded stud, grind two flat spots on it, and weld the control arm square hole smaller to fit, and use a locking nut to hold it together. At least that way, they can be taken apart again, if necessary, and even without pulling the pivot housings out. Veteran Posts: 295 Location: Tallapoosa, GA | Got the shaft ends ground down, only losing the first washer on both pivots. The other two on each are saveable. I also 'marked' the wiper end of the shaft with a notch to reference the control arm pointing 'up' on the other end. The driver side I marked with a deep scratch on the shaft. This should totally eliminate the possiblility of not being able to get both wipers lined up perfect once everything is re-assembled. Calling it a night...... Veteran Posts: 295 Location: Tallapoosa, GA | Bench tested the wiper motor, ran fine for 5 minutes, 'til there was something 'hitting' inside, and it locked up. Tore it apart and found the armature was hitting the fiberwrap that protects the wires on top. This is why it is so important to bench test this stuff before putting it into the car. Even though I thought I had it perfect.... nope....flaws still exist. No problem. But then my day went from bad to worse..... shortly after spilled a full jug of sweet tea all over the workbench and floor getting the motor back apart, got the floppy disc wet with it (had the pics on it); tried to save the pics to the drive, ruined the 3 1/2" floppy drive and disc so I lost all my pics of the finish of the control switch which I completed earlier... Then my digital camera quit working!!! F-it!! Time to pick up a case of beer, slam it down and quit while I'm still behind... Dammmit, I had some great pics on that disc too... of the re-assembly of the wiper switch, etc.,..all lost... that's the "Schlitz"........

Veteran Posts: 295 Location: Tallapoosa, GA | Thanks guys! Yeah, I shoulda backed up the floppy..... Oooops.... oh well. Those special pliers in the pics are old dental tooth-pulling pliers. I bought a few on ebay for around $20, and they really work great for taking off/putting on clips, hard to get at washers, etc. They're heavy and heavy-duty and are a little larger than a regular pair of pliers (length). As for the sport-tone insert, I plan on painting it bright gold with large, heavy metal flake. And Marc, I should have two pieces of sport tone stainless trim left for the driver side fender. The rest is a few door pieces for a four door sedan. You got first dibs on whatever I got extra, Marc.

Veteran Posts: 295 Location: Tallapoosa, GA | Finished up the wiper motor today, found a tiny piece of solder in the grease (that's what jammed it up).... bench tested it, and it works beautifully. Also, you'll see in the pics, I pulled the terminals out of the plugs to clean. I ground down a small screwdriver to fit, and ground down a metal fingernail file to the size of the male terminals, then crimped the female ends, re-bent the holding tabs before re-inserting into the plugs. Make sure to do this one wire at a time so as not to get any mixed up. And, in the final pics, I show how to use the old wiper blade holders to install a new rubber blade. The blade is just a generic insert that comes on its own plastic housing. I removed the rubber from the plastic housing, and installed it onto the stock metal one. (I don't like the plastic holders, as they are too stiff and don't contour to the windshield as well as the originals). Plus, I figured it a good time to polish the wiper arm parts. I also found that both tension springs on both wiper arms had the hooks broken, so I'll need to try to bend new hooks. Veteran Posts: 295 Location: Tallapoosa, GA | Today turned out to be a Great Day!! I finally saved up enough ca$h to buy a set of station wagon torsion bars and 58 Plymouth lower grill from Big M! Thanks John!! And, I received the reproduction "V" emblem I bought from Mike2nd, and I must say the quality is EXCELLENT!! I actually like it better than the stock ones I've had over the years.... Mike's are far more rugged, heavier, and firm!! Thanks Mike!! And finally, mstrug bought my extra sport-tone trim that I shipped today, which made the Big M purchase possible. Thanks Marc!! And now for a cold one on the seat of my "Fury-to-Be" with the Christine songs playing on the dry-driving speaker box....... ......CRANKED!!! Please PM me (when you get time) with whatever you have and prices. It'll probably be a while before I can move on anything though, as I need to re-save up for those headliner retainer strips.

Veteran Posts: 295 Location: Tallapoosa, GA | Mounted my "V" today! I know, I know..... it doesn't have the correct aluminum backing plate... I don't have one yet, so a stripped 57 one is all I have to work with for now. Plus, seeing as how cosmetics really aren't an issue now, I cut up a 5 gallon bucket and added another little goodie in place of the lower grill.......for now! Veteran Posts: 295 Location: Tallapoosa, GA | Thanks guys! I just bought a 58 lower grill from Big M, but I'd probably be interested in one of your beat up grills, Mike. Before I tackle the body and interior, I'm going to capitalize on the "rough-look" (junkyard DAWG!). Here's a list of the stuff I need: 1) Front/Rear, L/R valance panels 2) 58 tail light assemblies (rough lenses ok) 3) "V" aluminum backing plate 4) radio (not working, rusty ok) 5) lighter 6) COMPLETE 58 gauge cluster, including the front lens and alum. pod housing (clock delete preferred)--want a nice one. 7) 58 aluminum dash trim that goes behind knobs and controls, (both L/R) 8) 58 hood ornament (pitted ok) 9) aluminum hood trim below ornament 10) 57 wing above trunk lock 11) blinker switch lever (rusty ok) 12) fender mirrors (don't have to be Plymouth, pitted ok, so long as the mirror glass is useable) 13) cowl chrome grill 14) 58 fender spears (pitted ok) That's all I can come up with for now. Everything that is chrome on the car, if it isn't nice now is going to be filled, sanded, and painted with heavy metallic paint/clear. So if you've got pitted, rough, crappy parts that would cost a fortune to re- chrome, they're perfect for me! Also, if anyone wants to barter the rear wheel stone chip guards, they're up for grabs. They're coming off the car. Thanks guys!!
