Hey Guys, I'm looking for some opinions on gas tank repairs. I started cleaning up the gas tank so I could put it up this weekend, but found some pin holes on the bottom side, the size of the tip of a ball point pen. The inside of this area is also rusty, about a 1 1/2" square area. I would prefer to brase it up, but will probably end up with a really big hole. I also thought of soldering it, as that won't require as much heat. But will it hold? Or I could cut out the rusty area, put a patch piece inside and brase that in place. What do you guys think ???? Thanks, Jerry

Of course there's no substitute for a new tank, but since that's probably not going to happen, you could try the auto parts store epoxy kit made for gas tank repair. My son scraped a hole in the tank of his '69 Dodge that I epoxied nearly twenty years ago and it's still not leaking.

I'm gutless when it comes to using heat of any kind for gas tank repairs unless the tank is drained, pulled and all the proper precautions are used.

GaryS, Thanks for another option. I didn't think about that. The tank hasn't had gas in it for months, maybe yrs as there are no gas fumes present. Jerry

I use muriatic acid and power wash clean. Then dry real quick and pour 1/4 gal WD40 to keep from flash rusting. The hole can be brazed shut. Before and after pics of my '59 dodge.

I used an electric soldering iron to fix the one in the dodge (temperarilly) untill I could get a new tank

My tank had lots of rust holes in it and some pretty major punture dents

I am the same, a bit chicken when it comes to sparks and flame near a fuel tank

Oldwood, does your tank have a big magnet screwed into the bottom side ?

I don't think so. What you see in the 1 pic is the drain plug

If you are going to weld or braze a gas tank, after power washing and draining, put a open air line into the filler tube. This will flush out any fumes that may be in the tank.
Catch ya later.

After being rejected by several auto radiator shops I was told about a radiator shop that repairs semi-truck and equipment radiators. After talking to them, they said they fix fuel tanks on trucks and equipment all the time. Might want to look into a shop like that if you don't want to do it yourself.
