The ad says 1841 manuals were built in '58. Is that correct?
How many were V8s?
What transmission was used behind V8s?
Was it any good?
Were they all column shift or was a floor shift available?
Could any of the group be ordered with a stick or was it just the Plyms and Dodges?

You can bet that many/most were bolted to the six. No idea how many were
actually made and tned to "not care" about people's "stats", as they tend to
usually be BS. Anyone paying attention can tell you a manual trans Dodge in
1958 was a seldom seen bird. That is enough for me.

In 58, the T-85 was still a couple years off, so you got the old battle ax taxi
cab tree shift 3-speed, possibly (?) beefed up for V-8 use ????

Were they any good ? Hmmm .... not for racing, or heavy abuse, ... or easy
use in commuter traffic. No synchro in 1st or reverse means a dead stop means
no easy shifting from 2nd to 1st when traffic inches forward 20 feet. But is it cool
Hell yeah ! Pushbuttons have a period charm, but to this ADD kid, something
DIFFERENT carries a lot of weight.

Floor shift did not come back till 1960, so column shift was your only OEM option.
I have my doubts an Imperial could be ordered with a stick, but everything else
in the Mopar livery could be. But it was rare. Afterall, it WAS "the automatic age"
and manual shifters were highly unpopular with the general carbuying public. If
memory serves, DeSoto built something like 98% of their cars with automatic. That
means they DID build a few with sticks. I think I saw one once. Lower tier makes
would be more likely to be built as sticks.

My 57 Coronet is a V8 stick. The 57-59 three speeds were quite weak but they did put some in 300Cs and all 501s got the manual trans. There were three flavors, 6, V8 and taxi. And then there were OD units. They all had different ratios. The 300Cs and 501s got the taxi units. From what I have been able to find, there were improvements made to the trans over the period it was offered so I would look for a 59 unit but it is still a pretty weak piece.

Might as well finish it up. slap every piece of chrome from any mopar you can fit... Put the Plymouth V's on the front fender... maybe some 59 stuff would fit?

That should be 1,418 V-8s made with a manual transmission for Dodge in 1958. That comes from Collectible Automobile V. 10 #2 "1957 Dodge: The Sexy Swept-Wings" by Jeffrey I. Godshall. Godshall cites Chrysler Historical Foundation for those numbers and he is an excellent authority.

According to the same article, there were 4,731 manual transmission 1958 Dodges - only column shift.

Let's review ...

... the tiresome red and white paint, the fender skirts, the cheesy chromed
headlight hoods, the excessive and inappropriate added bling ...

I suspect the new owner will be required to acquire the obligatory fake food
and window tray, drive-in theatre speaker, and cardboard cutouts of:

a. Elvis
b. Marilyn Monroe
c. James Dean
d. All of the above

.... oh yeah, and let's not forget the tripod and reader board, doo-wop sound
system, .... and a large supply of Viagra.

Who wouldn't want to have a car like this ?

Thanks for the info boys.
I'm just curious about the manual transmissions having not seen one before- I didn't realise you could spec a manual V8.
I'm happy with the powerflight in my own car and love the way it slips into top as soon as it can. May as well be single speed (except for when I'm holding it in low on the hillclimb courses).
