I have a couple of questions about the oiling system on my Dodge 315. I think I know the answers but am looking for comments before I put the pan on.

Mopar installed a bypass valve which diverts some oil from the filter to the top end of the engine. They also installed an anti-drainback valve. Some pictures are attached.

In a previous rebuild, someone installed a piece of round bar stock to block the passage to the top end of the engine and give full flow through the filter. They kept the canister type filter and anti-drainback valve though. My questions are: Don't most spin on filters have the drainback valve integrated with the filter? If so, do I need to re-install the old ball and seat?

As long as the oil can get to the filter and back you're good to go. Some of the early 331s had this passage only drilled enough for the anti-drain back ball assembly to fit. One other trick is to pull the interior oil passage plug that's behind the dizzy shaft & drill a .030 hole in it to lube the cam/dizzy gears better, acsessed through the plug in the bell area that lines up with the shaft & interior plug
