Ad says it's a 57, but in fact a 58.

That would look pretty cool just leaving the exterior as is, maybe clear the roof so it doesn't rust anymore.

I just returned from looking at this one. Nice guy who has it, bought it out of some foreclosure and said it was sitting in storage shed.

You could drive it as is....but not for very long....it has the usual rust as well as a less usual rusting of the C pillars at the base = right where the roof attaches to the car. Strangely, the lower quarters felt pretty solid. Also unusual is the front bumper is rusted through at each corner of the hood - it's like the whole car had some sort of caustic liquid dripping over it at some point. Over in this side of Houston that's easy to imagine.

Original 361, probably would run still. The oil looked good and it spun over. Non-AC car, PB and PS but no other power accessories.

If anyone is seriously thinking about this one drop me a PM if you want my full opinion.

Coastal cars will get that top side rust like that. Ocean fog settling on the car builds up as
concentrated salt. We saw it all the time on the Pacific coast. Pretty sure the Gulf is no different.

Charcoal top and sweep looks mighty good with that Champagne Mist yellow !

More pics.

For our friends overseas...this car is located fairly close to the Port of Houston, maybe 15 miles. I am guessing the owner would be willing to have it trailered or towed there, assuming there is an exporter there.

I don't even know that TV show , but the seller of the car even agreed they would not do the car justice and they offered a lower price .
I will in fact keep it as a survivor if its possible and get it mechanically functioning and leave it . Maybe down the track restore it , but I would still love to find that Elusive 58 Fireflite 2 Door Spring Special in Heather blue (dream dream dream !!!)

Here is the add , even though its a firedome .

The car in the ad is a Fireflite. The fender ornaments are a dead giveaway. So is the tall back glass, although that was optional on Firedome.

Clarifications

The recently purchased dome is Spanish Gold code U on the charts; Sand Dune Yellow was a sweep (only) color also code U. The same Spanish Gold was introduced late in the 57 model year

The 1958 Spring Colors were Persimmon Red for the sweep and Heather Blue and Spring Rose on the domes and flites. In a twist, Heather Blue for the 1959 DeSoto is NOT the same Heather Blue as in 58 (Service Bulletin 1029)

===============================================

Not sure if I am reading that right, but for clarity, fender ornaments could be ordered onto a Firedome.
The tall back glass was not available on Firedomes or Sweeps. That optional larger glass stuff started in
1960.

Tall back glass was optional on the 59 Firedomes.... not sure about Firesweeps but I have photos of 59 Firedomes with it.

As to 1960-62, all 2 door hardtops had one-sized - tall - back glass. On four door hardtops from 1960-62 there were both low and tall back glass depending on model.

Are you sure about that ? I am not that hip on 59 .... it seems many detail things loosened up
for 59 that were model specific before. My dislike of 59's is no secret, and I've spent little effort
trying to learn all the ins-n-outs for them like I have for 57-58. So, learn me here !

In 1960, those back glass options were all over the board. Plymouth and Dodge 2HT's could get
high or low back glass, and as you say, the 4 doors had multiple variations in both sedan and HT.
Never tracked the specifics. Just know they have a lot of variations, compared to the 58-and-earlier
cars.

Yeah, you're right about the 1960 2 door Hardtops large and small rear windows, I was thinking only of the Chrysler/DeSoto 2 door HT rear windows, not Dodge or Plymouth, which of course I know there were two sizes of rear windows on the 2 door hardtops.

As to the 59 Firedome with a large backlite, here it is.

No I bought both of these cars , but the Dome in Houston I think is better so I will sell the white one now , maybe hopefully to someone before it gets shipped to me since the car is still sitting at my shipper in Los Angeles . I don't have long till its packed though . As its probably better off in in Europe than in Australia as they are more popular in Europe than here .

The fender ornaments could be added individually or as part of a chrome package with the bumper bullets and rear bumper extensions. That's on a Firedome, not sure about a Sweep.

As for the "sky high" rear window treatment of '57-59, I was just recalling having seen this as optional on lower model Chrysler/DeSotos. Here is Chrycoman's take on it:
Chrycoman - 2013-12-29 11:00 PM

For 1957-59, the large rear window on the 2-door hardtop was standard on the Fireflite, Adventurer, New Yorker and 300 - Mopar 1681 702 for clear and 1681 703 for Solex. Your local auto glass shop (if they can get them) would know it as NAGS B462.

The small window was standard on Firesweep, Firedome, Windsor and Saratoga with the large glass optional for 1958 and 1959.

So, I stand corrected for 1957 models.

I mentioned the blue car in the ad has the "fender ornaments" as seen on Fireflites. I'm talking about the objects pointed out below that lay over the sweep trim piece, not the top of the fender. I have only seen these on Fireflites, and never on any Firedome or Firesweep.

Talk about irony.... in all honestly, I'd love to restore her to her former glory, but I'm stuck trying to trade my Studebaker for something worthwhile, or sell it. I doubt your in the market for one so I wish her to a happy owner who will love her as much as any Desoto enthusiast.

Help me understand what I am seeing here - two hole, one looks like it is plugged intentionally? Is that how Desotos in 1958 were shipped?

Adventurer, since it will be a while since you get your hands on your car....I have a few more pics I took and if you want them, PM me your email address and I will send them to you.

That's correct - the outside is real, the inside one is fake. Getting the real exhaust pipe to line up so it looks like a match to the fake one is tough because of the twists and turns it has make working its way through the bumper to reach that point.

In 40 years of actively chasing Forward Look cars, with a HEAVY emphasis on 57-58 DeSotos,
I have yet to see a 58 Dome or sweep with a high backglass or any lit suggesting this was an
option. If it was, ... apparently few-to-none bought it.

The side trim medallion on the fender is peculiar to Fireflite and Adventurer. 57 had a V-shaped
medallion with the same Fireflite-Adventurer application.

Ian, do we know for sure that 59 Firedome is factory original ? I know of at least one 57 "Adventurer"
with the small backglass ... a car built from a Firedome donor body by a latter-day restoration "specialist"
who apparently felt no compunction to find a proper high backglass body before diving in. Back in the
day, few knew much about these cars and attention to detail was a lot more slack.

The exhaust exit via the bumper tips required clamping ball swivels to twist the pipe up through
the hole. It is rather complex and being exhaust, prone to self destruction from the corrosive gasses
involved. By the time I got into these cars, most were in sad repair and no one was servicing that
system in OEM form, choosing instead to just run the pipes out the back under the bumper.

57 had an oval liner in the bumper tip to broadcast a wider "spray" of the exhaust (if that really
happened), but with the "pinch" in the 58 design, the designers created a flat piece of metal, on which
was welded a short piece of sausage-cut exhaust pipe (to the inside port) to simulate a dual pipe end.
The flat insert had a simple cutaway to allow the actual exhaust to be independently inserted through
without disturbing the rest of the pod.

It is a super tight place to stick a bunch of complex curves, but allows the user to destroy an expensive
set of tail lights and chrome work in short order.

After doing some digging, I am only finding 1959 "low" models with the tall back glass. You may be right about the 1958s being extremely rare.

Here is a thread with several '59 Chryslers (your favorite):
http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=28006&...

And a couple of pics of a '59 Windsor and '59 Firedome with the tall window.

A large 'Vistarama' back glass was also an option on 1958 Chrysler Windsor and Saratoga 2-dr HTs. Not listed on '58 DeSoto Sweep or Dome in my literature.
In '59, it was available on Firedome 2-dr HT as an option.

There you have it. I was able to locate a picture of a '58 Windsor with this option.

As the add got delisted very quick before I could save a copy of it . It to show our government where I bought it and for how much , otherwise they can think you paid anything for it . cheers in advance

If customs thinks its worth more than you paid for it, they will happily charge you accordingly

Happened to my brother with a $400 US boat, they "decided it was worth abot 10 times that, and would not be convinced otherwise.

James,

Could you contact the seller and get him to write you out a hand written ( or typed, don't matter ) receipt for it and get him to send it to you ?

I've got the Aust Government import approval papers here for my Dodge but it doesn't mention any price paid on it however I wasn't the original importer either. I know the lady who imported my Dodge, if you like I can ask her as she has her own import business and has dealt with customs before and their robotic ways of doing things.

Cheers,

Terry.
