I've recently discovered a large amount of tiny metal flakes in my oil...

With right at 100K on the clock, I'm assuming this means the engine is due for a complete rebuild.

Kanter's "Deluxe Rebuild Kit" for a 270-V8 is $1400... but a very poor boy am I.

Does anyone have a lead on rebuild kits that I wouldn't need to sell a kidney to finance?

Also, is there a "better" option to rebuilding my 270 --- such as a more modern engine to match up with the original PowerFlite tranny?

Your thoughts, advice, and sympathy are greatly appreciated.

Wah Wah Wah  LOL

I would make a list and shop around a bit.  Kantor is high. . .Try summitracing.com and Rock auto.  You may do well if you go to a regular auto parts store too.

The metal could be something real simple.  Does that have a filter on it?

Yeppers... There's a filter... That good old canister type with the paper inside.

I've checked a couple of well-respected auto parts guys around my area... and several chain stores nearby... Nobody seems to have anything remotely related to a 270.

I will check with Summit and Rock Auto... Thanks for the leads... Any other biggies you know of?

Try Egge, they make pistons and engine rebuild kits.

Try your local NAPA store too.

Nathan; any big diesel repair places near you? Go see them with a sample of your oil (3 or 4 ounces) They can send it out, have it sampled and then tell you the make up of the shavings in the oil...ie: bearing material, iron, alum...etc. This may help you narrow down what needs to be addressed first. Just an idea.

JB makes a good point. Don't toss all hope over shavings. Is it smoking or any other sign of wear? Narrow down the possibilites on the source of the shavings and THEN make some decisions. Might save you a ton of dough and trouble.

The 270 is cute and adequate to push that old beast around. Replacing it with something else is always an option, and may offer certain advantages, but it will lack that original charm. All depends on your own priorities for what is important in an old car. I could give you all sorts of thoughts on the pros of B-blocks, but the changeover is a chunky commitment, even if it is just as easily reversible. Drop a line, if you like.

Ok... I suggest you tear that engine apart and do some assessing. You continue driving it, and you will grenade it for sure. You tear it apart, the minimum is a set of gaskets. If you get it apart, you should do valve seats. I am getting my 318 Poly rebuilt for less than a grand, so I am sure you can do yours for that. Just depends on where you go.

As for the metal, it could be bearings, or cylinder walls... If you could reuse your stock pistons, your rebuild would be rather cheap. If you are not smoking, that is a possibility. If your heads are halfway decent, seats shouldn't be to bad. Do as much of the work as you can yourself, but leave all the bearings to a shop for a warranty!
