Expert Posts: 3575 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Netherlands | It's going to get a roller cam soon and I need to find a way to fix the driveshaft issues for good now so I can make a full 1/4 mile pass. Eventhough the car is built for torque and not really for high rpms, I'm curious what it will run.

Expert Posts: 1302 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Skaneateles,NY(summer)/Port St.Lucie,FL(winter) | Herman, From the angle of the front wheels, it LOOKS like you were just about to lift the front wheels off the ground. Once your driveshaft situation is taken care of, it wouldn't surprize me if you did pop a wheely. What's the problem with the drive shaft?...

Expert Posts: 3575 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Netherlands | Well, the driveshaft can handle the power alright, as I've launched the car at fullthrottle and full tire-grip a lot of times already. The shaft just develops an unbalance at higher rpm's. And I can't seem to get rid of it. I've had it balanced twice already, to no avail. I've now removed a part of the grease-retainer and need to have it balanced again, but I'm starting to think it's not really the driveshaft which is at fault here, but more the transmission output-flange being out of center perhaps. The problem with this driveshaft is that is has the sliding yoke incorporated into it, just like the original shaft has, but it's all just 'heavy duty' now. So there's a lot of weight rotating at the front of the shaft. Since this is not a dragrace-car, I don't want to go through the trouble and costs of changing the car out to a late 60's transmission which uses a regular driveshaft, again more costs of having a sturdy drivehaft made up. I might be willing to try a '65 transmission so I still have cable-linkage AND a normal driveshaft connection, but I rather just leave everything be at the moment and hope to be able to fix the imbalance on this transmission. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Expert Posts: 3967 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: DFW, TX | Herman, the u-joints also need to be phased (positioned in relation to each other) so that they don't get a harmonic at higher RPMs. I'm sure your driveshaft guy knows this already. I'd consider getting it up on a lift, on jackstands and tie downs, and run the car through the gears. See if there is anything visibly wrong. You probably won't need to get it up to 100mph to see a problem. I did this once to find what I thought was a driveshaft balance problem. It turned out to be a broken transmission and engine mount. Good luck-

Expert Posts: 3575 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Netherlands | I've got 2 lifts in my garage, so yes I've checked out the car very well from below. Only thing I noticed was the 'grease-tube' on the driveshaft being out of whack a little. That's why I cut it off on the lathe. Now I just need to take another day off and dorp the shaft at the driveshaft-shop again. But since the driveshaft has been balanced twice before I would've thought that the balancer would catch this and compensate for it with some weights. My phones video-image rate and quality is too low to see any detail but here's a short clip of the car on the lift in gear...

Expert Posts: 3575 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Netherlands | Well, I rather not hope that people think of me as 'too serious'... lol ![]() ![]() If I was serious about dragracing the '60 NY then it would be my goal to get this car into the 11's or even 10's on the quarter mile. But since we don't even have a permanent dragstrip overhere, going after this goal is pretty much useless and mostly a waste of money. Having said that I know there are a lot of things I can still improve on the car to get more use of the power out the engine.
