I found a background.

Homepage is in german, so I will try to translate it automatically with altavista, so if there is something "strange" within that text I will help to translate it.

One men died in this prototyp....

The tragic history of the Water-pagode

It is 13 January 1963. The new test manager of the Mercedes car production plant Dr. Hartmut Scholz is quite hurry. On Wednesday he is to present the new Cabriolet of the series W113 to the gentlemen of the management and the representatives of the large Mercedes dealers and now that! Yesterday afternoon reported to it one its coworker that there would be problems with the chassis. One cannot say yet exactly, that it would lie, but at a certain speed the vehicle was only with difficulty to control. Dr. Scholz knew the car up to the last screw. All parts were examined for heart and kidneys and partly already longer in other Mercedes models in use. What could cause thus these problems?

The whole did not leave peace to it. Not to invent, if before the presentation on that Geneva automobiles salon still serious problems should emerge briefly now.

"treasure, I drives still times briefly into the work. Are to the news of the day again back!" he called its wife in going out too.

An icy wind struck it when opening the entry door against. For weeks the winter had the country in the grasp and today it nearly continuously easily had firmly snowed. Scholz stapfte by the new-fallen snow to its service car, a Mercedes tail fin of the type W110. Next week should he its "large tail fin" get, a 230S. Scholz looked forward already to drive in the next summer with its wife and the children at the Gardasee. It wiped the snow of the disks of its car fast and started the engine. The thoughts to the summer vacation had displaced nearly the concerns around the new SL. But while it drove more strongly becoming snow slowly by that toward work, the thoughts at the new cars came up again.

It would make again an expanded test run now. In this bad weather and besides still on Sunday probably hardly an engine journalist in the proximity of the work would roam himself, in order to make photos of the still secret vehicle.

The doorman at the factory gate greeted friendly, when he recognized the car of the test manager. Scholz had trouble to find the way toward test department. The work area was covered of a thick white snow layer and the clearing service was probably straight in other corners of the work busy.

With small drift Scholz drove around the last curve and stopped directly before the door to its department. Only few steps separated it from "its" baby. Naturally several stood the new SL in its resound, because series production would start in few weeks. But the metallicblaue car with creme interior equipment and verdeck was its avowed favorite. And straight with this car had arisen the chassis problem. Scholz went once around the picture-beautiful vehicle and painted with the fingers gently over the fender. Perhaps it nevertheless rather should instead of the tail fin a SL orders, thought it with itself. But its wife expected her second child and the reason had finally triumphed and the family car the preference/advantage before the sporty Cabriolet had received. Besides Scholz that in the engine development already with high pressure on a stronger engine for the SL one worked, knew that, if itself the car should to a sales impact mausern, surely in foreseeable time into series production would flow. Sometimes it is worthwhile itself to wait still something thought Scholz, when it went into its office, in order to get the red transfer characteristics out of the stahlschrank.

Carefully it fastened describes to the vehicle. Then he sat down and started the engine. The six cylinder took up the work and Scholz got immediately a goose skin. This brabbelnde sound of the engine left it again and again on the new erschauern.

Carefully it ranked the car by the hallentor after outside. It had become over not correctly bright all day long, but in the meantime it was already nearly dark. Scholz followed still weakly in the snow appearing the traces of its own car toward factory gate.

"well Mr. Dokdor, wants her with the Weddr really NO drives off?" the doorman asked. "no concern Mr. Braendle, I is in one hour again back!" answered Scholz and drove outside into the Schneegestoeber.

Such a winter they had not for a long time any longer had, thought Scholz, than it rolled direction Esslingen at the Neckar along. The river had already for a long time frozen over. Suddenly the snow left and the winter landscape by the coming up moon into a bluish light was dipped. The white volume of the river appeared clearly right from the roadway.

Scholz had luck - apparently only recently a snowfighting vehicle was here come through. The road was not free of snow, but on the festgefahrenen schneedecke one could drive to some extent surely. Besides was only very little traffic. Most sat probably at home at the warm furnace. In addition, in the SL it became now chubby warm. The again developed verdeck had been well isolated. Actually it would have the Hardtop alone at all installed however first was rather no more time been and secondly was feasible.

Scholz concentrated now completely on the vehicle and horchte on suspicious noises of the chassis. The strong engine with its 150 HP did not have problems with the easy Flitzer and in such a way became the car nearly from alone ever faster. Scholz was too much busy with the handling of the car, than that he would pay attention to the speedometer. The car lay like a board on the road. Nothing pointed on a somehow constituted defect or a wrong chassis tuning. Scholz planned to speak equivalent tomorrow early again with the coworker who had announced the error. It became slow time to turn around. It did not want to let its wife wait so for a long time. Straight one wanted to brake Scholz, in order to hold at the deeply snow-covered roadside after a suitable turning possibility look out, there passed it. In the cone of the headlights something dark before the car emerged - a deer! Stood in the middle on the road and its bright eyes stared as petrified at the near-racing car. Reflex-well-behaved Scholz tore the steering wheel around and stepped firmly on the brake. In the same instant the rear wheels lost their adhesion on the smooth underground and the tail of the car began to break out. Hectically the experienced driver tried to against-steer, but it was in vain. The vehicle turned around the own axle and only seconds later cracked the tail against a felsbrocken which is under the snow because of the roadside. Scholz saw the glitzernde ice surface of the Neckar on itself helpless zurasen in the next moment, when the Cabriolet down-fell the embankment to the river. The front of the car on the ice surface broke fractions of a second open later, which burst cracking. The picture-beautiful Cabriolet began to sink slowly in the ice-cold tides. On the driver's seat liveless the driver, who had lost consciousness in the case of the impact on the steering wheel. After few minutes nothing more was to be seen, except the reddish glow of a tail lamp by the car, which became slowly ever weaker.

In the again using snow above the disturbed deer ran away on the road. The snow began to cover all traces of the misfortune and already after a half hour was nothing more from the tragedy to to be suspected. On the Neckar the severe frost began to lock the hole in the ice cover.

On the next morning a large-scale search action began, after Dr. Scholz had appeared neither at home nor in the work. The police cars of the Stuttgart police looked for all roads of the environment off, but the still persisting snow not possibly made it to find something. After two days the search was without result broken off.

Bad rumors began to circulate, those meant, Dr. Scholz with the car had set off, in order to make it accessible for the Munich competition, to which naturally on the part of the work on the sharpest one contradicted.

Only as in April slowly the winter to the end went and the thaw used, found to road worker the fragments of a tail lamp and a bent transfer characteristic at the roadside.

After the police had the still usable accident-pure secured, the whole extent of the tragedy became clear. Police and fire-brigade boats looked for several-day-long the Neckar for the missed one and the vehicle off, but the river transformed to the rapid river did not give its victims again.

Only after decades the sad remnants of the once so beautiful and by its Bewunderern due to the form of the roof "pagode" baptized Cabriolets should be found later by coincidence.

By Dr. Scholz meanwhile was no trace.....

"bent transfer characteristic" means special workshop "number plate" or "licence plate" for test driving!
