I'm in the market for a new starter for my 318.
The one I have is either too weak (it's a 6 cylinder model) or too worn.
Either way, it won't crank enough to start the engine cold.

Has anyone tried it ?
Do you have other suggestions ?

Location: So. Cal | Hot Heads also sells a couple of them, one aftermarket version like what you show but for more $$, and another remanufactured stock one for less than half the cost. |

I wonder why not on Plymouth ? |

You can search Chrysler marine CW V8 too!. I had to cut an ear off one, but it was rebuilt and cost $49.

Location: So. Cal | This probably doesn't help, but there was no difference between the '56 277 poly starter and the '56 354 hemi starter. |

Location: Perth Australia | Just remember, there is poly and then there is "A" poly, the 56 one may be the poly that can be changed to a hemi, the "A" poly cant be. The early poly that was like a hemi wasnt used in plymouths, its also called "the dodge poly"
This is mostly what I have remembered from stuff I have read on this site, and my memory is not always perfect though 
The "A" poly starter is not available here in Aus (at least I couldnt find one)
I didnt try to hard to find specific parts, but you should be able to still get the "wearing" parts to rebuild it or (sometimes) find a starter that suits something else and just have to swap the nose cone (did that with my buick)
Good luck, Mark is on the money with those links above, but check rotation on the marine stuff, sometimes they make the engines run backwards

Location: So. Cal | That is why I told you it was a 277 poly. That is the first A poly motor in '56, not the hemi based version. So it is the same as the 318. |

Location: Valley Forge, Pa. | Because the solenoid on my Pontiac GTO was so close to the exhaust, I was dropping the starter once a year and many times in some parking lot late night. I went with one of those starters and never touched it again. IF you can find one that fits, I would go for it and I would take the old one and get it rebuilt for a spare. These new ones are nice and weigh 1/3 or 1/4 the weight of the cast iron ones + more room to work up there.
Your current one might just need a good cleaning and new brushes are available that should fix it up for a spare. I THINK bushings are available also but I had a friend make mine in his machine shop. I like to have a new or rebuilt spare of any parts like that because it is getting harder to find a replacement without searching and waitng. |

Actually, those are Powermaster XSTorque starter.
So I went and took a look at their catalog and application charts.
They are only listed for "Early Hemi" applications, so I guess that's why Plymouth is not listed.

Actually, I kinda restored it before putting it back (good cleaning, and new brushes if I remember correctly).
But there's obviously something wrong with it (apart the fact that it's a MDM-6001, which is listed only for 6 cylinder applications).
I do have a new and stronger NOS starter core from Autolite, but I doubt I can do something with it (the starter core being the axle and its coil).

She starts just fine, now.
