Expert Posts: 2264 Location: McComb, Mississippi | Since the car has sat for so many years, I thought it would be wise to replace the valve stem seals and since I'll be in that far, I am going to replace the valve springs just to be safe.

Expert Posts: 2264 Location: McComb, Mississippi | Finally got around to the valve spring and seal replacement. First thing I noticed was the lack of sludge, which confirms the rebuild. Second, the wrong springs were installed! The old springs were nearly half an inch too short and were slightly too big in diameter. All is put back together and I will fire her up first thing in the morning. Expert Posts: 2312 Location: Arizona | I'm no engine builder so this is just a thought, but maybe the shorter 2 piece spring is equivalent to the longer single spring??

Expert Posts: 2264 Location: McComb, Mississippi | No, the small springs are just to keep the Valve from dropping if the valve spring should break. The car is back together now. I disassembled and lubed the hood hinges and latch, installed a new engine to body ground wire and reset the points using a diagnostic analyzer from the mid seventies. I set the timing and carb and all is well now. It runs so much stronger with new springs. Next week I will adjust the transmission linkage and the backlash on the power steering gearbox.

Expert Posts: 2264 Location: McComb, Mississippi | Hello from Alaska! It'll be around a year before I can get back to my polara. Since installing new valve springs, the cars acceleration power has easily doubled. When I get back, im going to repaint it, new interior with all new weatherstripping.. I will also be adding air conditioning to deal with that Mississippi heat.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 417 Location: Bräcke,Sweden | Hello Christian, stay safe up in the cold north. I assume work made you move. Watch out for Icebears. Good to read that youve sorted out various problems with your Polara. You have come a long way from the first time I read one of your threads regarding your Plymouth.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 5139 Location: cornpatch county, Southwest IOA | Hi CB...I was just catching up on the last 3 or so pages of your thread. I gotta tell you, even tho I don't know you, I am proud of you and all you have accomplished. There are still a few of us old FL veterens that have seen you grow since first joining the group here. You have a very unique story, and Bart can feel good about being a part of it. If anyone ever says to me-" I would like to have a Mopar, but i can't afford it" I would think BS !!! If you really mean it, do like Christian did!! Why are you in Alaska?...............Best wishes.........................MO

Expert Posts: 1748 Location: Alaska | The flat springs are dampeners to help reduce or "dampen" the vibrations in the main springs but old ones are wrong or worn out. Who are you working for in Ak?

Expert Posts: 2312 Location: Arizona | Are the inner damper springs supposed to be interferences sized to just rub on the outer spring? Looks like they might be.

Expert Posts: 2264 Location: McComb, Mississippi | Hey guys, im doing well in Alaska. I am working for a small auto shop on weekends and as a greaser for the city of Bethels police and taxi cars. Just saving up money for a house and restoration funds for when I return.

Expert Posts: 1748 Location: Alaska | Bethel Ak. you get to see the "real" Alaska! Make sure you don't bring one of those Eskimo girls home with you. All of the spring dampeners I have seen are a close fit to the I.D. of the outer spring and tend to rub some on the them but are not supposed to be an interference fit. Expert Posts: 2264 Location: McComb, Mississippi | While I'm in Alaska, im collecting Parts for the AC conversion and restoration of the Polara so I can start immediately when I get home. Here is the Hayden 2765 fan clutch. Need to find a good 6 or 7 blade fan to go with the clutch. (securedownload-33.jpg) Attachments ---------------- securedownload-33.jpg (289KB - 162 downloads)

One nice feature on it, is that the water pump flange is already notched out; on the JAG XJ clutch, you've got to cut your own notches into its bolt-holes. No big deal, but labor saved is labor saved.

Expert Posts: 2264 Location: McComb, Mississippi | Thank you. I think this clock looks cool as well. After removing the movement from its case, it appears it just needs a good cleaning, lubricating , and filing the points and it'll be good to go.

Expert Posts: 2264 Location: McComb, Mississippi | Just got a stock spec muffler and a resonator from waldrons exhaust ordered. It is a custom order so it will take 8 weeks, but it's fine since I won't be home for nine months. They were highly knowledgable and the price was great. I highly recommend them. As for the clock, it has been disassembled and the internals look great. We are going to file the points and lubricate the mechanism. It should be ticking away in no time.
