I've been asked to change the trans in a 1960 Dodge D100. The truck may be seen on the Classic Trucks website if you Google it. The little lady who now owns it can't handle the lack of synchros in the current 4 speed. The truck has the original Poly engine. I have a 1970 Dodge truck 3 speed trans, bell and flywheel available. Will they interchange? I know I'll have to go with a different E-brake arrangement since the 4 speed had the E-brake on the tailshaft. Any of you oldtimers able to advise me on this one? If there is a better solution, I'm all ears! Thanks!

What does your bell housing come from? a 318? I think polys are small block bolt pattern, should fit. An early A833 four speed has provision for Trans brake and Ball And Trunnion (B&T) drive shaft. I bet ya Big M can help ya out, after his pig roast this weekend! marc.

The 60 Poly would have the extended crank with the 8 bolt flange, the trans/ flywheel won't work, the bell may work bolt one bolt hole is different, and the 70 trans probably won't bolt to it. 60 Dart (Chuck) would know for sure.

Marc, The engine in the truck is a 318" V8 'A' series motor, which differs from the later 'LA' series V8 318" . I have both bellhousings available. Before I teardown the 1970, I'd like to be sure the parts will fit. The 1970 had a completely redesigned 3 speed with synchro 1st gear which I'd love to use if it's all just bolt in. The Trans brake would sure make things easier! Cutting the driveshaft would not present a problem. I hope Big M can give me the answers i need. Thanks.

Fenix, Thanks for the input. I not giving up on the 3 speed yet but i do have the parts in stock to install a Turbo Hydro 350 trans. Unless a Torque Flight would make more sense. Any thoughts?

if you use a bell housing adapter/spacer it'll work . but i elected to use an la bellhousing and an la crank . then modify the bell to accept more of the poly's bolts . it's gets rather involved---------------------------------------------later

If your not gonna "dig" into the motor, the easiest thing is to switch to a pre 61 automatic, but then you'll have to come up with a shifter and a trans cooler and lines, or find a pre 61 3 speed and get a floor shifter if she likes rowing gears so much. I don't know anything about the later 3 and 4 speed bolt patters and front bearing retainers, and think about the clutch linkage also.

Thanks Chuck and Fenix... At this point because I've got an adapter, flexplate, TH350 and shifter in stock I guess I'll go that route.

he didn't mention a 350, but a TH350. Plenty of adaptors to put a brand X tranny behind a pre-62 318 A.
