Does the Chrysler Historical Society maintain truck IBM build cards, on microfilm rolls?

If so, the CHS reportedly will be closed until FEB 2012.

1957 serial numbers do not decode as 1957 was the last year Chrysler Corporation used numeric sequence serial numbers that started at 1001 with the 1924 Chrysler Model B.

For 1926 Chrysler began using the FEDCO system for car serial numbers with a layout of AA-NNN-A and was the first year Chrysler did not use the engine number as ther serial number. And 1926 was the first year Canadian-built cars had unique serial numbers. In 1929 the FEDCO layout became A-NNN-AA. For 1931 Chrysler dumped the FEDCO system and went back to numbers, starting at 1000001. Eight digit serial numbers began appearing in 1937.

After World War II Chrysler got the numbers organized with Plymouth starting with 1 or 2, Dodge with 3 or 4, Detroit-built DeSotos with 5, LA-built DeSotos, LA-built Chryslers and 1946-50 Saratoga with 6, Detroit-built Chryslers with 7, Dodge Trucks with 8 and all Canadian-built cars and trucks with 9.

For the 1957 Dodge Trucks I have the beginning serial numbers, but not the ending.

This one is a model K6D-100, Engineering code T534, starting serial number 82413001 -
82413046 6 - (very early production - 46th built)
Half-ton rating, either 108 or 116 wheelbase, 230-cid flathead six engine, 120-bhp

All the rest are model K8D-100, Engineering code VT534, starting serial number 84289001 -
84292880 V8 (3,880th built)
84293395 V8 (4,495th built)
84299324 V8 (10,324th built) Sweptside
84300350 V8 (11,350th built) Sweptside
84301038 V8 (12,038th built) Sweptside
Half-ton rating, either 108 or 116 wheelbase, 315-cid ohv V8 engine, 204-bhp

The K in the model number is the Engineering Department`s model year code for 1957. All were built at the Warren Dodge Truck plant at Detroit. Dodge Truck production at Los Angeles ended February, 1955. The Sweptside models were introduced in May, 1957, and used modified 2-door Dodge station wagon rear quarter panels. Standard transmission was the 3-speed column shift unit with the 3-speed Loadflite as optional. The 4-speed was not listed for half ton trucks.

You can try Chrysler Historical for the build record for these trucks which will give you the equipment installed on the truck at the factory as well as colour and interior details.

Nope.

Nothing on the pre-1958 serial numbers decodes or stands for anything. Except maybe the first digit as all Mopar vehicles with the 8-digit serial number starting with "8" were trucks. And they could be Dodge Trucks, Fargo Trucks or DeSoto trucks. Usually you had to check the model number. Dodge was K8100, Fargo was FK8100 and DeSoto SK8100. By 1961 the model numbers were all the same. If you lost the nameplate on the truck after 1961 you had no way to tell what you had.

Although the trucks used to have a data plate, and would get one again after 1958, 1957 models had a slip of paper with truck details placed in the glovebox. Can guess how long that piece of information lasted.

The Sweptside trucks were done on a special subassembly line. The quarter panels needed special treatment to get the passenger car quarter panels mounted on the box, as well as taillight treatment. Plus the special paint job. Once the body and box were painted, the unit went back on the regular line.

The only way to confirm what you have is the build record from Chrysler Historical. After February 1, 2012.
