Expert Posts: 1289 | I've been thinking of peddling Ol' MD2 ("Old Moby Dick II" -- my 300C) in favor of another "investment" (note the quotation marks) -- some sort of convertible. Anyone out there have some thoughts about my timing? Joe

Expert Posts: 1289 | Doc -- Naw, you only sell "trade-up" cars (like DeSotos) that way. Real automobiles require more finessing than a whispered "Hey, bud, wanna buy a FireFlite?" Joe

Expert Posts: 1289 | Doc -- I would never do that to you -- it's just that DeSotos bring out all the bully in me (of which there is far, far too much). After all, even Lola drives a DeSoto. However, I would trade the C for a '57 Adventurer -- only one that was black with gold, though. When I was pumpin' gas for my dad back in '59-'60, one of our customers had one and even today I regard it as one of the great and beautiful cars of all time -- especially since it pulled 345 horses out of its 341 hemi. Location: Parts Unknown | Seriously, about peddling your C ..... My first FL car was a sweet yellow and charcoal NY'er coupe. I saved it from a dipsh!t who was stripping it down to drag race it, but got in over his head. Said bonehead took all the trim off, bent it over his knee so it would fit in his trashcan, cut a hole in the hood and added a lovely Ford hood scoop. My recovery efforts began with trying to find all the now-missing parts. This led me to the 300 Club out of Portland (the ONLY Mopar game around in 1980). The kindly members were, ... let's say "less than encouraging" about me "wasting" my time fixing up a "parts car" ... as they were quick to point out, ANYTHING but a 300 was a "parts car". Naturally, it was impressive to see such similar cars to mine all pretty and new looking. I was duly impressed with the little spinner hubcaps and the aggressive forward-leaning grille opening that nicely matched the headlight opening profiles. What I could not get with was the lack of side trim and TAN interior ! Afterall, this is the late 50's we're talking about here !!! Not to mention, it seemed 9 out of 10 were painted Kelvinator white ! Between the low level of 50's "pizzazz" and the arrogant attitudes, a 300 (or running with such a crowd) seemed not such a good choice for me, So, I was sticking with my pretty "bumblebee" NY'er and pressed on looking for parts. Not all the 300 guys were so uppity, and a few helped me find parts and we had some laughs along the way. It was during one of these conversations with the uppity bunch that I was being leaned on to dump the NY'er and "get with the program" that I retorted "Why would I want a car with a tan interior and no side trim?" when one suggested I needed to "dump the NY'er and get a DeSoto Adventurer" ! Now, keep in mind, I was REALLY green to this whole FL scene and up to this point had never seen many FL cars up close and personal like. My brother was driving a 60 Fireflite coupe that I liked well enough, but it was too smooth, compared to the 57-58 design. So, I asked for directions in viewing one of these Adventurers and it was pretty much "stupidity" at first sight. THAT was THE car for me ! And so began an aggravating search for a car. I have told the story of my Adventurer here too many times, but after years of building it, I began to take on a deeper interest in the colors and interior fabrics of the fancier Fireflite. Like the 300, colors were very limited and interiors were BROWN. So, when the chance came up to buy the car I have now, I jumped at it. Now, we all have our nostalgic "triggers" and reasons for favoring one car over another. My friend Pat has a white 300C with the obligatory tan leather. He loves it because it is just like the one his uncle had (and he lusted over) when he was a kid. I came at my dream car through the back door .... no real personal encounter. Just a lot of design study and years spent looking at old cars .... this car captures more of what I like about late 50's cars than any other. I think when hunting, owning, restoring, or just enjoying an old car, you gotta ask yourself with some raking of your sentiments over the coals, of all the choices out there, why am I doing what I am doing ? If all the dots don't align, maybe there is a better car out there that would embody more of what a person enjoys in a car ? I mean, it is all personal, but the screening process is the same, .... at least for those of us who cannot afford a stable full of cars. How many black and gold Adventurers are known to exist ? Most people revere the 300 as the "ultimate" FL car. Maybe you could work a trade ? Personally, I would take even a nice Fireflite over a 300. But I am weird that way !

Gotta git it quick before Lancer Mike scarf's up another FL car! Joe, I hope it one of the most sought after and elusive (did I mention Rare!) 59 Plymouth Converts that are all the rage! That is the only reason I hope you sell your C for. LOL Hope it is a FL Convert you are sniffing out...to give up a 300 C for, is pretty high stakes

Expert Posts: 1357 Location: Iowa USA | Here is a little more fuel to the fire. I bought this in the early 90s for a grand. I had an 57 Adventurer coupe at home in the garage so when I found it I almost pissed my pants. It did not have the motor, but I found the original motor about a year later in the hands of a racer that was running it in a drag race rail at Eddyville Iowa until it started smoking. When I found the motor he said he wanted the money back that he had paid for it 10 years prior so I gave him the $100 and took my engine home. It is now being resotred in Italy. Hated to see it go but could not afford to restore it. The top bidder was from Italy.

Expert Posts: 1289 | Guys -- I was thinking about a '60 Dart D-500, but since it has a replacement engine rather than original, I think I may pass. BTW, John, speaking of rare cars - did you know that they made only 1577 SonoRamic cars in '60 and only 771 fuel-injected Vettes in '65? The trouble (one of them anyway!) with me is that I'm attracted to engines as well as external appearances -- especially multi-carb set-ups and fuel-injection with lots of chrome accessories and special paint schemes. If it had been left in the U.S , most probably it had been considered too rotten to use for more than parts. Don't moan and complain when you see a youtube video of Rafael scaring the s**t out of yet another friend, while testing the car on the road.

Joe ********************************************** Doc diagnosed himself as having A.D.D. (oh look, a quarter!) as well as being dyslexic. Part of my problem is that I like all too many cars and my parents never kicked me to the curb to get the Ivy League education and related income type job to cut those cheques ! The Doctor suspects our friend Joe might have a similar problem .... too many shiny objects and not enough green rectangles to soothe the "itch" ???? Joe, ... I feel like the end is all too near at 50. You have to have at least ten years on me, raising the question: With three minutes left on the clock and my team being two touchdowns behind, can I realistically expect to pull a win out of this ? My buddy Alby told me when he was 80 that he never expected to live so long. After going ashore in the first wave at Omaha, every day was a "free pass" after that. He went on to say that now that he was 80, he had 80 more years of living to do !!! I lost contact with Alby when he rode his Harley to Minnesota from NC for a family reunion and then decided to go see the Pacific Ocean again. When I inquired of his daughter where he had disappeared to, she told me that he had been killed in Arizona on his return trip when some bonehead pulled out in front of him with a car. A life well lived for sure, but the end always comes too soon. I am p!ssed with myself for not just doing my convertible and being happy with it. I have wasted more than half the game and the clock is always ticking. If the shop and cars were done, I'd consider the game won. But I am points behind and little time left to get to the finish line. You never know when the bell might ring.

If so, then the engine issue is kind of irrelevant. The blocks were not distinct or marked, other than year and displacement. Building a correct replacement would be a cinch if you have the D-500 parts.

Expert Posts: 1289 | Doc -- Yup, it's the 4th quarter for me as well. The first was very hard fought and we were even down by six at its end. The second was rough, but I caught the eye of a cheerleader, so that helped me to pull and open a few holes (I was a guard, as you can surmise), plus sack a couple of quarterbacks that were looking at the cheerleaders at the sidelines. During the third, we got a lead and were able to pad it a bit in the fourth, so now we're letting the second string play. However, the parking at stadium is a bit limited so it can't accomodate any more vehicles without moving one or two. However, in spite of what she says about the Big-Tailed Beast, I sure am glad I married that cheerleader. Joe

Location: The Mile High City | Go for it Joe! Dad used to trade around old cars like baseball cards. You win some, you lose some - but you never look back. As a result, Dad owned a lot of great cars at one time or another. Lee - that is a great car! I have seen the restoration photos and he is doing a fine job. No regrets.
