I finally put a timing light on my 61 Ply with a 318. Specs call for 10 deg advance with the distributor disconnected. Mine reads way advanced; I'm guessing it shows about 30 deg. advance. I'm guessing because the mark is way ahead of the tab on the block. Do Mopars of this era use rubber connecting rings between outer and inner pulley discs like some of the old Fords? If they do, are they prone to shearing? Thing is, the car runs fine. If it was actually that far advanced I would think it would kick back like crazy when trying to start. Suggestions?

Thanks, Tony. I thought that might be the case. Chaney, my timing light doesn't have a V8 setting. That's my dwell meter. Installing the clip on #2 cylinder wire won't get you anywhere near a timing mark. Not knowing which of the front cylinders was #1 on this Plymouth, I tried both of them.

I'll try to get a picture tomorrow, Chuck, but this car only has 27K original miles and the engine has never been rebuilt. I'll see if I can get a good angle for the camera. Thanks for the idea.

Try Damper Dudes in CA

http://www.damperdudes.net/

or Damper Doctor

http://www.damperdoctor.com/

Both are in CA, and I am sure can rebuild you damper.

When I rebuilt the 413 in my 65 NY'r, I got a recon balancer from 'damperdoctor' in Redding, Cal. When I put it on the timing mark was off about 2 inches. I took timing cover back off and rechecked cam/ crank timing, it was correct. I compared it with the old damper and it didn't match up. I didn't have time to mess around sending back and forth until getting correct one so I marked it and cut a new timing mark on it. This may be frowned on by some, but it worked for me. This eng runs great and am satisfied with it. Just relaying my experience with dampers. Jerry

Is it possible they put the timing mark where the spun one ended up?

If so, as a precaution, before sending a damper out for rebuild (by anyone) you need to determine static TDC#1 and mark that offset on both the ineer and outer rings and include a note to effect of "I want my cut TDC mark to appear where this new SHARPIE marker line is. Look to inner ring also for offset"

That way there is NO confusion on the part of the rebuilder in indexing the damper mark(s)

Seems to me that if these guys are rebuilding 'experts' they should know where the timing mark is in relation to the keyway.

No damper on 318. Just FYI.

You should buy a shop manual or AEA TuneUp Card. It's a great help.

Ron, do you mean that the front pulley on a 318 is just one piece and has no rubber insert?

Just a hub & pully. An LA damper will work.

Chuck, I tried to get a couple of pics of the timing cover, but with the A/C compressor and all of the extra belts I couldn't get the camera in close enough to see anything of value. When I get a chance (I'm going in to get a new hip next week) I'll bring up #1 to TDC and see where that mark really is.

Thanks for the pictures, Chuck. I have the correct cover! Now it's on to checking TDC mark like I said above.
