Veteran Posts: 148 ![]() ![]() Location: Napa, California | A small tribute to a great designer. The California plates read "VRGL XNR". They will look good on my 57 New Yorker 2drht. Now all I have to do is finish the restoration.

Afterall, this is one of the flagship Forward Look designs you are talking about. Colors ? Equipment ? Details ? Let's see some photos ! ![]()

Veteran Posts: 148 ![]() ![]() Location: Napa, California | The car came turquoise and white and will go back to tq and wht. I hav'nt seen the tq and charcoal combo but it sounds interesting. In 1967 my first car was a 57 nyr and to this day I have never seen a finer looking car.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Parts Unknown | My first Forward Look car was a 57 NY'er 2HT and I know exactly what you mean ..... a flagship of the entire fleet. I gravitated to DeSoto for a couple reasons: 1. The name "DeSoto". In 1981, telling someone you drove a DeSoto caused funny looks to anyone you told. 2. I liked the tail lights more. 3. The loopy New Yorker emblems seemed poorly matched to the angular theme of the Forward Look. Small nits to pick, for sure. The 57-58 New Yorker truly are some of the crown jewels of the era. The biggest reason I went DeSoto ? I never could find a New Yorker convertible available for purchase ! Beautiful car. Keep us posted on your progress. BTW - did this car have either fender or hood ornaments ? Most NY'er had one or the other - usually the fender "birds".

It's very logical and easy to read ( not like : 10SNE1, for example) . The DMV has several VOLUMES published, just listing the huge amount of personalized license plates currently in existence. I wonder if VRGL XNR has been obtained in any of the other 49 states?

Veteran Posts: 148 ![]() ![]() Location: Napa, California | D500neil, You can go to the Cal. DMV web site and type in the plate your looking for and it will tell you if its been taken. If available you can buy it with a crdit card ($41.00)and pay $30.00 a year to keep it on a car or on the wall. My 1969 Daytona has "145 EASY" for its plate. When people ask me how fast will it go I just point to the plate. Thanks for the nice comments.

When I bought my Fury, the prior owner had already gotten personalized plates that read '57 Fury' even though the car was far from driveable. In order for me to use these plates, I had to have him sign them over on official DMV paperwork. ---John

Posts: 19146 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: bishop, ca | Oh, yeah; the DMV confuser will tell you if a particular 'name' has been selected, but, their books will show, alphabetically, and numerically what-all combinations have been taken. The books, for example, will suggest certain permutations of 'names/slogans' which you might not have considered and will save you from some considerable wasted time in playing on the confuser, as almost-anything that you can think-up probably [except for VRGL XNER ; which IS 'gone', now...] has been previously selected, in California. Ok, so you gotta go to your local DMV office; it's time well spent, and you shouldn't have to wait in line just to go look at their license plate books. Edited by d500neil 2009-05-26 5:37 PM

Expert Posts: 3156 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: NY & VT | Great idea for a plate and what a beautiful car - the '57 Chrysler NY'er is truly the zenith of FL design... my first FL back in the early 80s was a '58 NY'er convertible (now in Sweden I think) but I always wished it had been a '57.

Veteran Posts: 148 ![]() ![]() Location: Napa, California | Doctor Desoto, The car only has the badge in the middle of the hood, no fender spears. I love the Desoto rear bumper and exhaust tips. I test fit the Desoto bumper on the rear of the NYer and it looked good. The exhaust tips fit right where the spacer sits under the NYer tail lignt.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Parts Unknown | A ChrySoto ! While I like just about any old car in the context of its era, etc. .... and I really like FL cars as a group, there are a select few that stand WAY above the rest. I cannot think of a single FL car though, ... that I consider to be "perfect" in all senses of aesthetic balance. I love the 58 DeSoto in almost all respects but really do not like the side sweep .... the 57 sweep is so much better. On the flip side, I don't like ovoid shapes very much and the oval themed bumper and exhaust tips really don't work for me, while the pinched / broken ovals on the 58 do ! A guy just can't win ! ![]() If I had my druthers, the 58 New Yorker would have retained the 57 front bumper and grille and would have been the "perfect" FL car. But that "wide mouth" grille just seems too proportionately large on the 58's. I love the very unique side sweep and the lettering style for the emblems was top notch and very in keeping with the Googie style. This is all picking nits though. Any 57-58 New Yorker / Fireflite coupe or convertible, in my eyes, is about the pinnacle of Exner's genius. A few others come close, and all are great in some respect, but there are those few that really set the high water mark. And let's not overlook that great color. A turquoise NY'er will always trump a tan or red one ! ![]()
