The change-over in technology during this timeframe is really interesting to me. If I were running that project and money was no object, I’d buy a collection of starters if I could find them to compare dimensionally and functionally. I’ll pass this info along.

Forgot the 318 info
In 1961 Chrysler had a V8 starter unique to the 318 on Plymouth and Dodge - 1889 100.
Unit was also used on 1962-64 Dodge Trucks and 1965 Plymouth and Dodge 6 cylinder taxis, manual transmission.

The differences between reduction gear and non-reduction is in the flywheel tooth count. The reduction gear starter also had that Mopar gear whine when starting. The stariers for the Canadian market were supplied by Prestolite at their Sarnia, ON plant.
And the exceptions ? :
All 1962 Canadian-built slant six models did not use the reduction gear starter. And that held through 1966.
All 1962-65 US built Chryslers and Dodge 880 models with a manual transmission.used the old style starter.

i don't know if it relevant to the poly 318 in this instance, but i do know that when they went to 12 V systems in the 230 flathead engines, (1956) they changed the ring gear on the flywheel. it went from 146 teeth to 172 teeth on the newer 12 volt engines. The starter gears would not mesh unless those are matched up. Ask me how i know, when i tried to use a 12 V starter on a 6 volt flywheel.
Depending on the year of the engine , if it is a 1962 and back it will use the style shown in the picture , the mini starter or later ones will not work with the pre 1962 polys due to the extended crankshaft , they do make a mini starter for the earlier engines but its not the one for the newer LA engines and the two bolt was also available in a 12 volt after 1955 when the 1956 cars went to 12 volt , cool project have to share the pics when done , Vic http://hothemiheads.com/transmission_adapters/starter_replacement.html

I appreciate the validation. I had suggested a mini starter but apparently the goal for this project is as near 100% original as possible.

A "regular" LA / A (Poly) or modern 2 bolt mini starter should work, but the marine application may throw that out the window. The starter and mounting flange on the bellhousing look nothing like any automotive 318 LA or Poly that I've ever seen.

A bit off topic for this group, but was wondering if anyone here at experience with the 318 Poly and starters. Apparently there was a 3-bolt and a 2-bolt version? Are they interchangeable?
My engine builder is working on a super rare 318 Poly Marine for a Italian boat project (the one that James Bond drove in Venice). The bell housing is a 2-bolt but the starter he has is a 3-bolt. The 2-bolt was apparently 6v only? Anyways, he is trying to use a newer starter because he needs 12v and the starter was reversed for the 318 Poly Marine application.
The starter seems to be grinding somewhere on the flex plate or flywheel. Maybe a spacer is needed? Listening to that old direct-drive starter, the starter itself sounds ok but smells like it is under stress so I’m thinking it is binding up possibly.
Thought I’d throw this out here to see if anyone has any ideas on what to look for.
(BTW yes, the engine builder machine his own header adapter plate…)
