The Kwik Lift is safely & quickly elevated by placing your floor jack under the “bar” and it jacks up the rear ramps.  As the ramps/car rises, the rear “leg supports” drop down and are securely steel-pinned in the down position. 

There are other detailed pics on the website illustrating the simple/secure procedure.

 

By the way, I purchased their four casters to place under the Kwik Lift when I was working on the Plymouth and needed to move the loaded car on the Kwik Lift to the “other side” of the garage so I could drive the 340 Dart from the double-deep portion of the garage.  The casters are so well-made/efficient that I could move the entire Plymouth on the Kwik lift to the other side of the garage with one hand.

I guessing you have a low ceiling situation? Otherwise you would be considering a "regular" 2 or 4 post lift?
