Re: How To Tell Value of '64 Street Wedge Belvedere Car

I’m going to veer from such a consensus myself. If it started life as a street wedge car, I believe that is still a street wedge car and would be more valuable than such a ‘64 that started life as a slant six or poly car, everything else being equal. In other words, I believe that an original street wedge car sitting there with an incorrect engine will still be “more valuable“ than a slant six car sitting there in exactly the same condition even with the original slant six in it. Of course there are plenty of factors that go into any car value. If the car had claimed special equipment that was not verifiable, yes that would be a different story. But this car’s status will also be documented in its data plate (and assuming that matches the stamped SO numbers and IBM card. )

When I bought my ‘62 max wedge car from Roland Osborne (see several issues of Chrysler Power mag in 1992 for stories about the car before I bought it) it was equipped with a very nice 383 and A883 in place of the original engine and T-85. Of course that made it less valuable than with a correct engine and transmission. But that doesn’t make it the same value, as a “Govier validated“ and “Darrell Davis listed” car, than one in the same condition that didn’t start life as a max wedge car.

Again, my opinion Wade and everyone, and we can agree to disagree where applicable!

Wade, I think the point that I, and others made, is that without the original 426 engine, it is no longer a Street Wedge for collection purposes.  The substitution of a 440 is good, but it is no longer original.  Galen certifies the car as to what the VIN and production sheet says, but when you change the engine, you lose the cachet of being a 426 Street Wedge...

Nice car, and valuable, nevertheless.  Just not as valuable without the original 426 Wedge....

Thanks for the input guys.  This is definitely an original 426 street wedge 4-speed car, has been documented by Galen Govier.  No rust at all, and no dents anywhere (must be the lighting).  Not sure if that changes anyone's rough estimate?

You could date code build this back to correct. Hard to do but I suspect it can be done. Then you have an "original" car.

It's no where as sleazy as putting a VIN on a body but is it now a true 426W factory car? I think it's a tough call. Personally, I'd call it a clone, others might not see it that way.

At one time, my '65 /6 auto was going to be a 426W 4speed when I got done drag racing. That's obviously a clone. An original 426W with that drivetrain...

Nice car.  Looks like there is a dent in the right front fender in front of the wheel opening.  Great color combination, and the red interior (same as in my 64 Fury convertible) really sets off the black exterior.

Unfortunately, without the original 426 wedge it is now no longer a Street Wedge to most collectors.  The 440 helps, but a car is only original once and now it is not considered a "survivor".  Still a great car, desired by many Mopar followers (just not some "purists").

I am not an expert, but without more information, I would think low to mid-$20s for a very nice driver.

Team,

Writing on behalf of my pa-in-law.  He has a 1964 Plymouth Belvedere, an original 426 street wedge 4-speed manual shift car, black with red interior.  It doesn't have the original engine, but he's got a fresh 440 in it, not a screamer but close to factory specs. Has had an "upper level" amateur restoration (interior all new, repainted, new front end parts, etc.) but not a perfect or show car by any means.  It runs and drives very well, I've attached a few photos.

He's 80 years old now, and is thinking about selling it - I'll be helping him since I'm faster on the computer.  But he (we) really have no idea how to go about setting a price.  I've looked at a few of the price guides & sites, and he's talked to a few local MoPar buffs here in Montana.  We've seen / heard estimates ranging from $27,000 to $46,000.

So I guess we're looking for any inputs on an approximate price range  you think the car might go for, and where the best source of credible cost data is for coming up with a starting place for an asking price.  I know this is an inexact science and prices can vary based on condition, timing, etc. but would appreciate your knowledgeable opinions.

Thanks much - Wade & Larry
