I have run the external filter kit but with a trans temp guage on my car for many years; it is the B&M unit but all are quite similar to the Derale unit with replaceable filter you have listed. Not only does the external filter & line along with my “deep trans pan” provide added fluid for added cooling, the trans fluid is better screened/cleaned with the external filter and more easily replaced. The trans temp gauge allows me to accurately monitor the trans temp (running a 3500 stall 10” convertor in a race-prepped 904) and with my external trans cooler my trans temp always run from 160-180F during normal driving. When I hammer the throttle, trans temp will rise to slightly beyond 185F and cool almost as fast as it rose (due to the superior trans cooler & added fluid capacity) so there is no detriment or added wear to the transmission. Writing the mileage & date of the last filter/fluid change on your external filter is an added feature making maintenance intervals simple. Gary P. So I dropped the trans pan and found a filter instead of the screen, so somebody has been in there. The filter was installed flat against the valve body. I have done some searching and reading, including Tom Hand's guide and it appears that there should be a filter extension between the filter and the valve body. This is a 1963 and I am using a filter for the 64-65 with 2 ports for the rear pump. I trust this group to have the right answers, so should there be something between the valve body and filter? WIX 58964 is an In Line Transmission Filter that has been reported here as used as a replacement. It is about $16 at RockAuto. I think it is plastic. Also reported used was a Magnefine metal filter that is a few bucks more and available in 3/8 and 5/16 size. https://www.magnefinefilters.com/main.sc
Don't know about the screen question: i.e., replacing the screen with a filter in pre-1964 727s.
Thanks, Gary H.
