Are you putting a gasket on both sides of the valley pan, one against the head and one against the manifold, I rebuilt a 400 back in 1985, it never made it into the car, 73 road runner, still have the engine, never started, so it's been a while.John

Yes use gaskets!

The fabricator of the engine used some type of sealant as a gasket Ming substitute. After about 10,000 miles all sorts of leaked developed. Killed all the vacuum and diminished the power breaking capacity.
Took it apart, cleaned to goo that was used, used a good gasket and it made all the difference in better performance. Especially the ability to sync the dual carbs. Runs way better.
