Re: Sealing 383 exhaust studs

Manifold studs are done and the car is back together.  I replaced the two driver's side back studs and the back passenger side stud.  I found new ones that were slightly longer going into the block and sealed them with Permatex "The Right Stuff".  I made sure the studs were very tight into the block and waited until the next day to install the manifolds.

The other good option was the Teflon Tape.  I guess time will tell if this works but other places I have used The Right Stuff have worked extremely well.

Thanks for all of the comments and information.

I found that the two rear studs on each side are shorter than the rest of the studs.  Has anyone else seen this or is this something that may have been done by a machine shop when the engine was rebuilt years ago by another owner.  I've looked at exhaust stud kits and all of the studs in the kits seem to be the same length.

It did help get the manifolds off but the rear stud on each side was the one that was leaking.

Hello,

I have put up enough with a couple of exhaust studs leaking coolant.  The guy who put it together (me) many years ago must not have sealed them well enough.  What do you guys recommend for sealing the studs.

Thanks
