Re: Headers

Bob,

I concur with Jim and Mike.  I have a complete TTI exhaust -- headers are 2" primary / 3.5" collector with 3" exhaust pipes on my '64 fury RB.  As for fitment the headers slid right in place, however on the passenger side the H-pipe did not line up with the collector -- called TTI and they have a piece to align the two.

Prior to the TTIs I used Hooker super comps (again 2" primary/3.5" collector), they were a bugger to install and required a fair amount of modification.
I had a set of Hedmans in the late 70's when the Fury had a LB 383 and remember having to lift the engine up to get them to fit.  I'm sure they fit better now as Jim indicated, but they were all I could afford at the time.

some things to consider on fitment:
- are you using raised exhaust ports or stock
- angled or straight spark plugs
- smaller diameter headers fit better but do not perform as well -- this depends on engine mods

I realize that I did not answer your other question regarding price, but I did not want to wrestle with getting the headers to fit so I bit the bullet and bought TTI.

you may want to consider shorty headers -- never tried them or know anyone who has.

good luck and happy 4th,

Hi Bob,

I'll echo what big Mike said, as I like my TTIs on my '64 big block Fury, but if I recall they were near $900, so it depends on your definition of arm and leg.

I can also add that if the criteria were "fits and cheap," I bought and installed a set of $200 Hedman Street Headers (P/N 78030) for start-up and break-in when I first built my engine, and was actually surprised at how well they fit (if you overlook that I probably lost 3 months off the end of my life breathing in the shipping paint as in burned off).

However, if one were to upgrade those headers to ceramic (P/N 78038) it might be considered a good value at $478.  Just food for thought.

Thank you,

Jim

Hi Bob,
Your request hinges on what your definition of "decent' means? I have Dougs and TTI brands, both up there in price and reputation. The Dougs are on my 66 Belvedere and fit like a glove. The TTIs are for my 65 Belvedere and I wasn't real happy with their fitment. The collectors were not aimed toward the frame notches so I had to modify both the collector extensions to get to the notches. They did clear everything though. This is all I can report on. Good luck.

Anyone know of a decent set of headers that will fit with out spending an arm and a leg?
     Thanks
