Hello,
I converted my 64 Poly with an automatic and 63 383 4-speed both to the flanged U-Joint like you have seen in pictures from others. I had mine converted over 10 years ago. Had I found the parts to rebuild mine I would probably have kept the ball and trunion joint.
There are companies out there who will make very nice custom drive shaft that replaces the ball and trunion joint, some put the slip joint at the transmission others at the differential, both seem to work very well.
Mine were done at different times at different drive shaft shops, nothing special the parts are off the shelf items. If they don't know what you are talking about take a picture or two in and you should do fine.
A Google search on ball and trunion will give you a lot of information.
