Solid Lifters vs Hydraulic for a Poly 318

Any advantage to changing to a hydraulic cam?

My ’62 of course came with mechanical (solid) lifters.  I plan to warm it up with the first step up in Schneider custom ground Poly camshafts offered by Gary P.  I have no problem staying solid, had great luck doing the heads last year at this time.  (3-angle grind, surfaced, manganese bronze guides, positive lock stem seals, new springs).  Had the wife out the helping adjust the valves, runs very nice and quiet now.  Put about 1,200 miles on her since.  We set them all cold plus .002, then set one cylinder hot with the engine off to spec .010 intake, .018 exhaust.  Let her cool, measured that cylinder to get the actual setting and set all the cylinders to the actual measured lash.  Came out to .010 intake, and .020 exhaust on my engine.

It will have the new Poly manifold, Edelbrock 1406 carb and the Mopar Performance electronic distributor.  Otherwise will be a stock engine, when I do the bottom end will have it balanced.  Other than a spin-on oil filter adapter from Canton Racing, the only other mod is a heat-riser delete exhaust manifold (driver’s side cut, rotated and welded to fit opposite on passenger side).

>The stock cam profile is an anemic 240/.390-.400” (198@.050”)

>The first HP Cam is the  Poly 256/.435” (208@.050”) solid

>256/.440” (206@.050”) Hydraulic.

Welded up a tool to open the valves enough to get the pushrods in place, similar to what the manual shows but a little more artsy....
