RE: "Space saver" spare fitment

I’ve seen a lot of aftermarket wheels cause vibrations on newer vehicles. Primarily newer vehicles, but some RWD older stuff as well. In almost all cases, the centre bore was over size.

So, IMO, it’s imperative to try to get the right centre bore fitment. If you are using factory rims (say Dodge rims on a Ford) from days of yore, you will probably not have an issue. But these new wheels are just not up to par when it comes to quality control. A little “acceptable” variance in a Chinese factory can make for a pretty shaky ride in North America…

The issue I was referring to on those Lumina wheels is actually the bolt pattern. I don’t recall the centre bore comparison, but the bolt pattern is actually something like .5mm larger or smaller. Now, that might not seem like much, but if it allows the wheel to sit incorrectly because the tapers on the studs bind on one side, you can have vibrations or the wheel can work loose. Also, you subject your stubs to lateral stress they really aren’t intended for, and that can cause premature fatigue there.

So my advice – If you are using aftermarket steel wheels, avoid any type of multi-fit, and get the ones specifically for your vehicle. They tend to cost up to 50% more, but that can turn out to be money well spent. Also look for N.A. manufacturing. Harder to find, but better wheels.

Ray Henry, with your wheel experience, I would like your opinion. Just how important is the wheel hole in the center being a close fit on the   front and rear hubs?  Custom wheels  are not registered on the center, but what about steel wheels that use stock lug nuts?................MO
