I'd guess that the throttle pressure lever on the left (driver's) side of the transmission is wired in place and that's why you've driven it 4K miles without grinding to a halt. The kickdown linkages all run from the left (driver's) side of the carb to the throttle pressure lever. There are several different styles, depending on the engine and the body style, as well as the year the car was built. The attached may help you to understand what you don't have. There are lots of folks who can steer you to the parts you need and there are at least two cable replacements for the old style linkage. They all require installation and adjustment. In my opinion, starting from scratch, use the cable kit from Bouchillon Performance.I've driven this car 4000 miles this way over the course of a year. What should I look for to see if I have a "manual valve body" or "wired in place"?

I hope that (and the info above) helps.
