YES!! I got the problem solved. The instructions were not very complete. with a extra shift lever included with the kit and the possibility of switching the reverse rod end for end and each lever having four different ways they coud be installed, It was just a matter of finding the right combination. Works great now. Tomorrow I will finish up the clutch linkage and then will need to hunt up a driveshaft. Then I can fix my attention to a radiator and the water pump.
