Sounds right Neal,,,,, I know when I replace the tappered in my 63 Savoy,
with a 65 Belvedere axle, that the tires rubbed, and I had to get wheels
with more backspacing to be able to run the same tires

so by
that it looks like keeping your splined axle rear will yield a narrower
setup than changing to another rear ala 66-70.But the splines drive me
crazy. I was reading a book the other day called "extreme muscle cars" and
they were claiming that the a990 cars had narrower rears than a standard
b-body of the time. That is the first time I have heard that and i am
somewhat skeptical. I knew the 71 up b-body rears were much wider. I picked
up a complete e-body 8.75 the other day for 100 bucks. Too wide, but the
price was cheap enough , so i figured it could be a narrowing candidate.
The 8.75 rears are getting hard to find. The last i saw one in the junk
yards was 2007, and i grabbed that one. neal
