Since the effort to replace the voltage regular seemed much less than that required to replace the alternator, and since I was not completely confident of the diagnostic effort that pointed to the alternator, I swapped out the voltage regulator. My voltmeter is back reading on the order of 14 volts or so.

Today, I had a dead battery. How can tell which of the components in this path are bad? I'm guessing I have, as possible points of failure, the alternator, voltage regulator, some mysterious wiring issue, something else. Could a bad battery cause this? What steps should I take to narrow things down? Any advice appreciated.
