I do not know the % of loss but bottom line is not to get disappointed if
the number is not as high as the next guy as there is no possible standard of
measurement between dynos/atmospheric temps/engine performance on a given day
etc...the real question is does the on street or on track performance satisfy
you? At the track, if you win your race(s) the “dyno numbers” are pretty
much irrelevant.
Many "numbers” are erroneous, misleading, and at best are a guideline – key
word is guideline; another tool in your war chest of Mopar knowledge and
experience. Rear end ratios and high stall convertors will also skew the
numbers and prevent accurate readings or comparisons.
For example, my rear wheel dyno numbers on my 67 Dart w/mild transplanted
340 build (284 Cam, LD340 intake, 850cfm Thermoquad, stock pistons & valves,
1 5/8” Headers, 2.5” exh. pipe, head work...)
277 rear wheel HP
268 “
“ “
from all the “other guy’s” numbers I should be ashamed to drive down the
street, much less hit the track. However, I turned 12.8 @106mph in the
quarter mile (even let off the throttle prematurely on that run) and beat every
car I raced that night (obviously all the paired cars were under 12.8...)

Once apon a time I was told that the biggest loss was the rear
differential, and that the 90 degree turn of the power was the culprit more so
than the transmission

WoW!
that nuch parasitic loss?? I wonder if some kind of
friction reduceing manual tranny (4 speed) lube and rear end
lube would make a noticable difference?
