The condenser was for AC hum or noise in the radio.  If the owner complained of a hum or ticking noise the condenser was installed.  No complaint no condenser.  That's why some do and some don't have condensers.  Generally cars in big city's with strong stations never got them and cars in outlying areas with weaker signals got them when they were tuning the radio antenna for maximum reception.  The cut red wire probably was because the condenser was designed for another purpose but was used as a noise suppresser so extra wires were eliminated.  Also condensers could be found on alternators, voltage regulators on the firewall and so on, all to surprises a humming or ticking noise in the radio.  BTW the hum was usually from the alternator and the ticking was from the voltage regulators.

Subject: Instrument cluster question

Hi there folks,

Would appreciate your help solving a mystery,  Behind my instrument cluster, right near the voltage limiter, is what I can only say looks like a condenser (from a points and condenser type of set).  It has a black wire with a spade connector that is plugged into the center of the three holes where the voltage limiter is plugged in.  It also has a red wire that is - well - snipped off.

Question is - what is this thing and more importantly, where does the red wire go?  I can't seem to figure it out - at least it is not obvious.  The only thing I could image is that at one time it was spliced into the red wire that connects to the ammeter.  But those wires are long gone.

(I tried to add some pics with and without the voltage limiter connected.)

Please help!

Thank you,

Jim
