Could also be the float in the carb is set too low, or the fuel pump is not pumping well. Low fuel in the carb can slosh forward and the car will die as no fuel is left in the bowl for the car to run. behaves like it just ran out a gas, and it does...sort of. That was a fun problem that took me a long time to figure out one summer a long time ago.
That is what I would look for if clamping off the power brake vacuum line doesn't solve the problem.
