Re: 440 noise

Older, true forged pistons produce a slapping noise when the engines cold, and disappears  as the engine warms up. This is due to larger tolerances when building the engine. It is required because forged pistons expand more than cast/hypereutectics.

I'm sorry I should have explained, basically blueprinting is what it sounds like, machining every part including the block to factory/blueprint specifications hence blueprinting.  In manufacturing every time a mold or tooling is used it sufferers wear and tare and and eventually degrades to + or - tolerances but the parts created are still usable even though they are very slightly smaller or larger than when the tooling was new.  When you blueprint an engine you machine everything to the exact tolerances specified in the blueprint created by the engineer for the manufacturer to create the actual product.  Thus creating uniformity and even power in all cylinders.  So, if blueprinted it is hand built to specks, loose tolerances & slapping pistons are NOT a byproduct of this procedure.  To the contrary a blueprinted engine is built to tighter specs than one fresh off the assembly line.  Ask the builder to show you the blueprint and specks he built your engine from.  Bet you will have him stuttering and scratching his head.  I bet if you simply pull a valve cover or your intake you will see no machining in the heads or lifter gallery that should be seen if blueprinted.  Now there are a lot of tricks that race engine builders use that are to many to get into now that increase horse power but shorten the engines life and a byproduct is noise.  These tricks are used on race engines not street engines unless you plan to be inside your engine on a regular bassis.

I'm not sure what's entailed, but he gave me all the paperwork and stuff from shop that did it. Said the looser tolerances allow it to rev faster and generate more horsepower, at the expense of burning a little oil or having a little noise.

I have blueprinted several engines and have not had piston slap on any of them.  Slap = wear and egg shaped cylinders.  Just saying!      Maybe they do it differently now days.

Do you know what is entailed to blueprint an engine?
