Or is it an alternator your thinking of, that has the output?  The regulator just turns the alternator on and off.  Be very careful with high amp alternators, our wiring systems were designed for 45 amp when they were new and in good shape!  Loosened & corroded connections will overheat and if your lucky just stop working, if not bring some wienies to roast.  Maybe not today but it will.  Just my two.
