Re: Headliner with exposed bows

Ain't the bows like in my Newport, they look like metal but in fact they are plastic?  They look just like that in my car, but the material is basket weave vinyl with insulation behind it.  This is the hard tops were done.  Is your car a hard top?  My book called is Headlining Hardboard.  From the book it looks like each section is separate piece and looks like it's the same stuff they put in modern cars.  It would be 5 roof panels and 2 sides ones.  Is that right?

If the hardboard is still good you can just simply recover each piece.  They sell the materiel at any upolsltry supply store or shop.  It comes is tons of colors, it's a nice fuzzy cloth with a thin foam backing that you glue to the hardback board.  Each one is separate from the other so it's not hard to do at all.  Kind of like a VW bus, some of those had that stuff in the too.

Just be sure to clean off all the old mats before putting on the new stuff.  If you need some new hardboard, Georgia Pacific still makes it I think.  I think they make if for most of the cars now.  But it's simple and cheap enough to get.

My first thought was try SMS.  They are not cheap, but may have it.

All 3 of the 64 Dodge wagons I have had used the same setup. Kind of a fiberboard. No idea where you'd find replacements though.

Subject: Headliner with exposed bows

I'd asked advice on this last summer, but since we have a lot of new
members and I'm getting ready to dive in, I thought I'd ask again.

I need to replace my original headliner for my 63 Polara 500.  The
stainless bows are exposed with the headliner sandwiched between them
and the roof.  I like the look and want to keep it.  The headliner
itself is less like perforated cloth and more like some kind of
'foamish' squishy material with a hard backing board underneath.  It's
completely deteriorating into small flaky pieces that fly all over the
place.  Below are a couple of pictures.

Does anyone know a source for this 'foamy' headliner material?
Does anyone know what it's called?

When I was in Carlisle in July, the experts at Legendary had no clue
(I brought samples to their tent).  Walking the field, I looked into
every 62 to 65 car that was there and didn't find ANY with the exposed
bows; everything had the bows hidden and a more typical perforated
vinyl material.

I'd really love to find the original material, but if I have to I
guess I'll settle for something close.

As always, thanks.
