Larry,
As has been said, you must keep the the Poly or LA eng. with a small block
727A transmission. All the Poly and LA engines do not care if the trans is
cable shift/pushbutton or linkage – you can use the cable shift pushbutton trans
with all the Poly or LA engines. If you choose the 360 engine you must
change to a “weighted” torque convertor for use with the 727A transmission, that
is all the modifications.
As to the chassis, the 360 will need a motor mount change from your 318
Poly mounts and your water pump outlet is on the opposite side of your Poly 318
radiator which will require that you use a 318 Poly water pump to match your
lower radiator hose outlet.
If your 360 needs “work” or a rebuild, it may be best to retain the Poly;
of course “aesthetics” or beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I like the
“look” of a Poly in the 62-65 engine bay rather than the LA engine. Big
Blocks look at-home there but it does require more “changes” and fabrication
along with attendant costs of switching from a small block to a big block
powertrain.

I understand that a small-block will interchange, but what about conflicts
(such as a 360 having external balance, as opposed to the internal balance on a
318/340)? And will they mate without an adaptor to the SB727 push-button
transmission?
Will a 383/400/413/440 mate up with the SB 727 transmission with an
adaptor, or would I need to find a good BB 727? Any conflicts with the LA
vs A engine mating up?
It would be simple to throw in a later LA engine, but I don't want to lose
the push-buttons.
Thanks,
Larry
