I agree,,,,, most of the lists I have seen are not correct, most like to
lump all the B-Bodies together, and although they are close, they are not the
same, only ones I remember for sure were 63 and 65 where I found the 65 to be
3/4 inch wider, or 3/8 on each side.
The actual measurements needed are perches center to center,
which for the most part the Bs were the same
The other measurement needs to be taken on the outside
of drum where the wheel actually seats, because that is where the wheel is going
to end up staying
Backing plate measurements lie, because they will move
in or out depending on shoe size,,,,,, you could actually measure the flange on
the housing but why make it complicated

For a start, the narrowest of all (apart from the A-body
units) is the
'62 B-body. I am not certain whether or not the '63 is the

little wider, but the '64 is definitely wider.
From that
Hemmings list Gary has included above, I am suspicious that
the '64 figure
is wrong. Unfortunately, I don't have the materials on
hand to prove it,
but if it is correct I would think it possible to
put '65 flanged B-body
axle shafts straight into a '64 housing.
The lengths that we need to
have are:
Perches - centre to centre - I have little doubt about
those
published, this is the one thing that seems to be right
consistently.
Overall housing length. Measured with the drums off,
centre out, tape
straight over the flanges and across the front of the
empty housing.
Late sixties B-body is 55", late sixties C-body is 56½, '65
to '67 B-
body is 54½", all figures ± ⅛". I have a '61 Dodge housing here,
which
has the 6-bolt ends but is otherwise the same and could readily
be
altered to the later type, it's 55½".
As the 56½" dimension of
the C-body rear comes to 61¾" over the axle
flanges, it's reasonable to
conclude that there is 2⅝" of axle sticks
out each end of the axle housing,
so 5¼" added to the axle housing
length will be your overall length. A-body
axles, of course, don't
stick out quite so far.
It would be good if
anyone who has a known (model and body type)
housing they are in a position
to measure accurately can do so and add
it to this list so we can learn
more about the variations.
