Hi Eric, Sure it can and does happen, one in a million trans. But no reason not to put an aftermarket cooler on it. My last 62 Newport I put one from Midas on it as I was towing a trailer cross country. It was on the car for 9 years and never gave me any problems. From what I've been told heat is a transmission worst enemy and anything you can do to make it go away is a good thing. All the tranny coolers I've seen are about the same. Tubing with fins that go in front of the radiator. I would not clip it to the radiator like I've seen it. I'd get the kind that has a bracket and bolts to the bottom radiator support rail, or frame rail. They are pretty easy to install, no problems there. They only time I've seen them leak is from external damage or a hose came off. Not much to them.
