Re: Shouldn't the oil pump shaft just pull out?

Eric,

Aside from a powerful magnet just the right size...you will need to get creative. I successfully remove the oil pump/dist. drive gear with a thin loop of piano wire fished into the hole and snagging one of the gear edges as I rotate the gear upward with a long handled screwdriver. With a bit of practice you will get enough clearance to loop one of the gear edges and lift the drive gear out of the hole. There must be a trick tool but this is way I have done it.

Installing my new cam. timing chain, gears, lifters, all that stuff is
out. Only cam and oil pump drive are in there.

I thought the oil pump shaft should just pull up and out the
distrubutor hole through the top. It goes about an inch and that's
it. I can pry it with little pressure a bit futher.

I googled and checked service manual but didn't find anything.
