Yeah I ran into that on a slant 6. Turns out when the timing marks are
aligned on a slant 6 number one cylinder is on its exhaust stroke and number
6 is on its compression stroke. Whoda thunk!

 No one mentioned this, but you could be 180 degrees off. You must be
sure you are on the COMPRESSION stroke at top dead
center..............................MO
