Another 1/8 bites the dust ...

Rich,

That's a shame about the drag strip. NIMBY makes them a dying breed.
I live on Long Island and our last drag strip in West Hampton shut
down a while back for condos. New York National Speedway is long,
long gone.

Circle tracks like Freeport and Islip are long gone. There's still a
circle track in Riverhead (http://www.riverheadraceway.com/) that I
take my kids to pretty often; it's like stepping back into the good
old days. But I'm sure it's days are numbered. Believe it or not,
once a month Riverhead started doing the "Hundred Foot Drags" which is
100 foot drag race across the middle of the circle track. The fact
that spectators and racers show up shows how desperate we are.

The closest drag strip now is 3 hours away at Englishtown and you have
to get through NYC to get there. Hopefully the situation is a little
better in more rural areas. There's a following on Long Island that
pushes for development and support to build a new strip when an
opportunity on open land presents itself, but it's always smacked down
despite overwhelming support at the meetings.

Damn damn shame.
