Gary,If all the ignition system checks out and the carb is clean you could try larger main jets. Drill them out one size at a time with number drills until the surge is gone. If that doesn't work go back to stock size and keep trouble shooting.

No one mentions the fact that today's premium fuel is the octane equivalent of regular grade back when our cars were designed.
